Good Article on Coyote Dens from University of Nebraska

Unread postby Clevinger » Thu Feb 21, 2013 8:13 pm

Worth the read (see link), but to summarize, they located 16 dens in an area in Southeastern Nebraska. What they found:

--High avoidance of humans. No den was closer than 400 m to an occupied house. Most were beyond 600 m from occupied houses.
--Unlike houses, however, they don't fear roads as much. Half of the dens were less than 400 m from a road.
--They didn't seem to need to build as close to a water source as previously reported.
--They liked transition zones in cover, especially if they involved native grass.
--Most common sites were fence rows, patches of native grass, or ditches

It didn't mention whether or not they liked hills or low-lying areas. Typically I have heard that they like more elevated areas, but the article sheds no light on that...probably because everything in Nebraska is flat.

I am from Nebraska, so I get to make fun of it.

Here's the link. I shrunk the text size because it's a super-long address:
