Re: Coyote Terrain
I've had good luck with fields that have some thick brush around... Set up just in the woods covering the field and wood line...at least that works good in the south.... They usually come into the call at a field corner and look. Also, we have a lot of chicken houses and a farm around those are an ideal setup. I have had the best luck with hand calls. You can setup and call and if you don't see anything move a somewhat short distance and try again.

Pay close attention to the wind. Make sure your scent is not blowing into them where they could wind you without being able to see them or get a shot off. Make them cross an a open area in order to catch your wind.

Re: Coyote Terrain
I did just a couple of time that hunt, but it was with a specialist and we did it on the field.
Of course play carefully the wind like said & your camouflage are a key point too.
That's a very fun hunt, enjoy it!

This is good advice.... To add, a lot depends on your area... Around here we have lots of woods and not as much open terrain... If I do hunt fields I set up close to a wood line where I can see the field and woods... My scent blowing away from the woods into the open field.... Coyotes like to circle down wind of the call sometimes so try to setup where you can cover some of the down wind side if possible. If hunting private land I talk to land owners and find out where they see them. Also don't give up. Coyotes can range a good distance and if one is not in an area close by to hear the call then he won't come in. That is terrain dependent as well... In thicker wooded areas the sound isn't going to travel as far.

Also if you hunt with a friend have them cover the down wind side

Thats the best way... and its always good to be the down wind friend, cause he usually gets the shooting.
As far as terrain, seems to me they like grassy thick woods adjacent to fields around me. When you have snow on the ground its a good time to scout for tracks and find areas with high density.
