.308 in bolt action. Lots of options especially if you reload. Could also make the jump to an adequate elk gun also.

6.5 creedmore would be a good trade off. .308 or 7mm-08 in bolt action if you're on a budget. AR in 300 blackout or 6.5 grendel.

For deer and coyotes.... .22-250. I have killed a pile of deer with one and have never had to track one. Have since sold the gun and went to a pump .243. I did this because I like pump action, which is not made in .22-250, not because the round was insufficient.

243 hands down I think a lot of ppl don't know or just forget that a 243 is a necked down 308 so your getting a very fast and accurate caliber that's plenty big enough with a 100grn or heavier bullet for deer even out to 400 yrds with a well placed shot. Then you can use the light varmint loads for coyote. I recommend checking out the Ruger American Predator rifle idk if I just got lucky but I picked one up n it shoots under an inch group at 200 yrds which is phenomenal. You can stick 3 grand into n AR and not shoot half that accurate

I like the 30-06 pump. It just feels right in my hands.

I have a 30-06. 150 grain for deer. Drop it down real low for coyotes. It's a savage came with a nikon scope. Paid $500 for it.

You can most certainly get a good ar 15 that shoots well without spending 3k. I bought this a long time ago and it's a tack driver at 100 yrds:

I also have a savage model 10 predator .243...it's a tack driver as well. neither of these guns are lightweight hump all day through the woods guns but they are accurate. i really like the savage with accutrigger.

Ive been hearing alot of good things about the .243 caliber... it would be nice to be able to go somewhere and shoot a bunch of different guns, just like most people do when looking at new bows. Too bad bullets arent reusable like arrows...

I shoot a 25-06.

It's not the most popular gun in the world, but look up stats on them. Very legit caliber. Plus you should be able to get some heavier loads for deer and lighter loads for yotes so you don't blow them to pieces.

I wouldn't shoot anything smaller than .243 for deer. My buddy has one but he hung it up for a .270 due to marginal knock down power.

.243 is a good round. But It all comes down to shot placement and shooter ability. If you shoot a deer in the leg it ain't gonna matter if you have a 30/06 or .243. I've also seen people go with a big caliber trying to be macho but can't control it or they're scared of it resulting in lots of wounded deer. Same thing with not knowing where the rifle is sighted in at. Whatever you pick shoot it and get comfortable with it.

I like the 243 for deer and coyotes. Flat shooting, lightweight and ammo is pretty much everywhere.
