Nocturnal, I think about your story a lot since I probably only live around 30 some miles away from where your wolf pack encounter occured this past Fall. How would you have felt if you were alone and without a firearm that nite that those pack of wolves circled you??????

I have a respectful fear of wolves. I feel a close encounter coming for me at ground level. Its coming for me I can feel it. Hopefully I don't die of a heart attack.

Freaky.

X2 I would love to hear this story

Yep that was me.. If I was alone? Honestly I don't know what they would have done. They did circle us and the one in front was whining with excitement. Which was eerie to hear. But they didn't show aggression in any way. They did follow us all the way to the truck. John you and I talked shortly after I posted on a thread about the incident. Your right, in the area we are, it is a matter of time until you do run into them. I know I'll run into one or a pack again. I've had two close encounters with them at night over the last 3 years. I just make sure to pack my .45 along with a full clip. You should too. As long as I have that. I'm confident to walk about alone in the dark. and yes. I too respect them. Fear? Not as much as the thought of what if. Now that it has happened. It's just a part of being a hunter. If and when you do run into them. You'll be okay. A little freaked out, but you'll make it back to the truck and laugh the whole way home!!

Man that's wild. I've never had a close encounter but I've seen and heard them numerous times while I was working in Yellowstone.

We were surrounded in thick brush. The one in front was within 15 yards.

Reason I ask is because your story is similar to an experience I had one time. Circled by yotes in the dark woods, and they were vocal. I never been circled by wolves so I don't know if they are vocal when they are on a hunt.

Sounds like the pretty much same experience I had. Felt like they were actually escorting me out of the woods. Once I reached my truck they disappeared. All I had was my bow so it was a little unnerving to say the least. I saw wolf tracks all over in the snow when I walked in to hunt so knew a pack was around. Never had issues before since seeing tracks in that area was very common so didn't think much about it. Won't hunt around there without carrying anymore.

Yep. Don't have to be fast. Just faster than the other guy.

Only downside is I'm usually the larger slower hunting buddy

That area by meadow valley wildlife area and Babcock and over to black river falls is no joke. If you hunt there and wander around in the dark, you have my respect. They don't make diapers big enough for me to be doing that.

Yeah an attack by wolves is slim. But if it will happen in Wisconsin, I would bet on it being there. Havent been back there in probably 4-5 years to see if the deer came back

Escorting you out is a good way to explain it too. They keep their distance but they do follow behind, enough to see their eye glow here and there.

No that's alright. They came in loud and confident. At first I thought they were deer running away and I didn't think anything of it. It was maybe 30 seconds I realized we were being surrounded. The one in front of us was the only one that was whining and making noise. He walked back and forth a few times in excitement at a uncomfortable distance. But the other 4 were quiet and we didn't physically see them until we were being followed out. They kept out of my light where only their eyes lit up.. but they were in fact wolves.

I've watched my half disabled english bulldog fiercely fight our young pitbull when her trigger was tripped, and I was terrified to get in the middle. They would destroy me if their attention was turned on me, much less a wolf. I think people underestimate the ferocity of a dog till they see it fight to the death.

I'd rather take on one wolf on the open then be tied in a gunny sack with a wild cat.
