Caught my biggest smallmouth I'm a tournament. Won big fish!

My buddy and I fished a bass tournament near Grand Rapids MN (not on Pokegama) yesterday. We started on a shallow largemouth bite but it wasn't on. So we switched to fishing a couple deep reefs with tubes. He caught a three pound smallmouth followed by a three pound largemouth. A little bit later I caught a largemouth just under 4 pounds and then hooked into a pig smallmouth. The fight was intense on the 10 lb spinning tackle. He tried jumping twice and I had my rod tip about 5 feet under water to prevent it lol! We got him in the net.

He would end up weighing 4.90 pounds! After it slowed down for a while we made a move. We found a school of baitfish surfacing near a deep shelf. I hooked into a three plus lb smallmouth on a crankbait. He made a couple bitlg runs but eventually we got him a couple cranks from the net. We could see he was barely skin hooked. Tragically, the bait and fish separeted, and he slowly sank back down to the abyss.

I ended up catching one more largemouth flipping a reed edge. My buddy lost two other smallmouth. We ended up weighing in 5 fish for 17.9 pounds. Unfortunately it was a six fish limit and we didn't have a complete bag. Winner was a hair over 20 pounds for six fish. If only we landed one of the three lost, we might have won the whole thing. Oh well, that's tournament fishing.

Nice fish, congratulations! Big Smallies are my favorite fish to catch. Pound for pound one of the hardest fighters.

Smallies are one of my favorite fish to catch and that one is a pig. Very nice fish!

Nice fish. I use to fish quite a few bass tournaments in my late teens/early twenties in NE WI. This thread brought back some good buried memories. Thank you!

Great fish for sure.
