1st pc of advice is FREE since im a nice guy!
I was looking at your avatar pic and I think your problem is your concentrating on numbers rather than size! You should toss those youngsters back and use bigger baits! I personally stepped up to 1/2 night-crawler and my walter size grew too.

Re: 40 inch pike? or 30 inch walleye?
I would cast to the pike hoping it was really a musky. A number of years back I actually caught a upper 20’s walleye off a mid lake rock pile while casting for musky. I quickly unhooked it, tossed it back in the water and continued casting not wanting to miss out on the prime spot. My dad freaked out that I let it go and never even took a picture. It was very close to 30” and not being much of a walleye fisherman it didn’t even register with me at the time what I just caught. In hindsight I regret not recognizing that I caught a fish very few ever get a chance to catch.
I actually like catching pike and have caught some nice one’s while musky fishing with a few touching 40” but never over. It would be cool to tangle with some of those 50” pike aka “water wolfs” I see advertised up in Canada.
