DIY Alaska hunt input needed

Unread postby Dewey » Fri Jun 20, 2014 11:15 am

It's always been a dream of mine to hunt Alaska someday. I figure I'm at least a few years out from actually doing it but never to early to plan. Figured I better get going on this before I get too old!!

Not looking for a guided hunt or anything like that. I realize options for unguided hunts are pretty limited but was thinking caribou or Sitka blacktail deer maybe. A fly in drop camp would interest me. Getting dropped off in a good caribou area to chase them with the bow seems like a very exciting hunt. A guy I work with did this with the rifle and had a great hunt up to the point a brown bear decided it wanted his caribou! Sounds like all part of the adventure to me!

Looking for input from anyone who has attempted this before and what my options are and what kind of budget would I need?

I have a buddy who guides for an outfitter in Alaska but unfortunately they specialize in fishing. I have heard great stories about hunting Alaska I am sure you will enjoy the challenge.

what part of Alaska do you want to go to? I hunted on Kodiak and it was awesome. I say do it as soon as you can because one never knows when their time is up. I'd do a google search and call sporting goods places in alaska and pilot services. they will be able to tell you a lot of info your looking for.

I am open to any suggestions. Tell me more about Kodiak, what type of hunting did you do? Drop camp on your own or did you hunt out of an outfitters camp?

Are you required to have a guide if you aren't an Alaskan resident?
