PA Elk

Unread postby JackKnifeJake » Sat Feb 20, 2016 3:12 pm

Just found out today that Pennsylvania has non res elk tag drawings for $11....and if you don't get drawn you do get a preference point unlike in Kentucky where you don't get anything....I didn't even know they had elk in pa.....

I've heard that they have elk in some parts of PA but I was under the impression that there was a very small number of tags issued out each year. I do believe that I also read that the elk population used to be much greater a long time ago so maybe they're making a comeback?

Elk population is doing great in PA. My uncle gets them around his property all the time. He lives in the benizett weedville area of elk county here in PA.

Yeah it's ruff getting a tag. You have to get it on the lottery system. And you don't have a choice of cow or bull. You just get what you get.

I Would love to get one.

Any beast members from PA even get one And have success?

X2, my dad is from Pennsylvania but I've never been there. It'd be cool to maybe someday have the opportunity to hunt there.

Pennsylvania is a wonderful state.w/o it's the only state I've ever hunted in unfortunately. Hoping to get a NY and OH license within the next year or so. I want to do some serious scouting before I invest in the licence.

You can shoot them here in VA and it will go on your tag as a deer....only thing is though theres three safe counties where the herd was introduced and you cant hunt them there....yet...and as far as I know no ones killed one outside of those counties. It would be awesome if they were back in PA WV VA and KY in numbers

A friend of mines father has entered the pa lottery for the past several years and has had no luck at all. From my understanding the herd is doing great and is a huge money maker for the town as the tourists flock to go on wagon rides to see the elk. Only issue they have is wildlifes biggest issue. The poacher. I think it was in 2014 the #3 or 4 largest bull in pa (400+ in) was poached along with 3 other Bulls.

Tags are very hard to get and unless they changed it, their preference system is a joke. I know a guy who hit a bull tag several years ago. After hunting the first hour with his rifle, he went back to his vehicle and grabbed his bow and shot a huge bull. He said it was fun but not much of a 'hunt'. They were not the least bit fearful of humans.

agreed. I've went with my parents and uncle to see them before and it reminded me of when I worked in yellowstone. They could care less about your presents as long as you kept a little distance.

Lottery system.
You can choose either sex or bull on tag option.
Don't draw, get an extra chance for following lotteries. Chances keep adding up each year.

I drew a cow tag in 2012.
Each area to hunt is different. Some the elk are a bit habituated, others they are gone like the wind when you are sensed.

About 125 tags issued with approx 25 bull, 100 cow tags being issued.

The article said that you had a .4% chance of being drawn.

When scouting and glassing for deer I've seen some tremendous bulls
Hoyt RX7 bow, and exodus broadheads
Beast stand and beast sticks.
