I already have the only rifle I would ever need. A BLR .358 Win with a 1.5-5x scope.

I have a 444 marlin lever gun that I use only here in wisconsin, good brush, marsh gun, heavy bullet lots of knock down power, doesn't have a long range but I don't really need it here. For Western Hunting a 7mm Rem Mag, awesome ballistics plenty big for elk but not too big for deer, flat shooting round. Moderate recoil compared to some of the really big magnums and ultra mags.

If you would have asked me 40 years ago I would have said a Win 94 in 30-30. I used one for 25 years and it never let me down. For the last 40 years i've used a Hawken style muzzleloader in .54. Black powder and a PRB (round ball). It hasn't failed me either. My style is still hunt in for close shots.

But for a true rifle, I recently bought a Bolt action 30-06. Ruger american. Nikon buckmaster 4-12x40. Haven't gotten it to the range yet but seems it will be a nice versatile all around rifle for the money. Capable of killing any animal I would set my sights on.
I own the same Ruger and I do like it.

Re: If you could only have one rifle for big game what would it
Any rifle caliber such as 30-06, 270, 300 win mag etc would be excellent choices. In my opinion I'll stay with a 30-06 since the ammo is so easy to get anywhere you go it's just a old reliable round. I've had good luck out of mine and the only down fall to it I'd say is the drop at longer ranges. My neighbor uses a remington 700 and has harvested deer, elk, and even went to Africa shot kudu, a wildabeast I think it's call, and a few other game species I can't remember. Choose what's legal for the states you wish to hunt choose what you like best and don't be afraid to put back extra money for a better quality. Buy once and be content. Goodluck!

My 308 Savage Hog Hunter is very versatile. with standard loads it takes a variety of game. With the subsonic and cast bullets small game is on the table.

300 win mag for most species, but my favorite is a 270 bolt in either mountain rifle or reg package.

I'm a fan of the encore. From rimfire, to centerfire rifle, to slug gun, to muzzleloader. Kind of cheating on the one rifle to do it all. Only problem for some is that it's only a one shot deal

I like the 300 wsm for big game.
270 is the best all around gun if i could only have one gun it would be a 270 Savage Accutrigger.

Because I am picky, this rifle, GAP Xtreme Hunter http://www.gaprecision.net/custom-precision-rifles/all-rifles/xtreme-hunter.html#cr-gallery in or, 6.5 GAP 4s, with the Jewel trigger upgrade.
With this scope, Hensoldt ZF 3.5-26x56, https://www.eurooptic.com/carl-zeiss-optronics-hensoldt-zf-35-26x56-riflescope.aspx
In this mount, ERA-TAC 36mm Adjustable Incline Mount - 40mm/1.57" T2066-0022, https://www.eurooptic.com/era-tac-adjustable-inclination-mount-36mm-40mm-157-high.aspx
I am picky because I missed far too many shots with a brand new M-24 back in the 90’s that I connect on with a well shot SOPMOD M4 today (think 700-800 meters). I consequently refuse to tolerate inferior equipment.
The caliber because the rifle only comes in one. Lol
