X2 but the actual rifle matters more to me the fit and the accuracy

I consider whitetail deer on the small side of big game. If the question was whitetail only the answer would change

.270. Model 70. There's just something about the bark of that rifle.
Since i can have more than one, add the .308 ;)
If i hunted mostly bear and moose and wanted a bulldozer for a rifle the fascination with the .338 would get the best of me.

Agree. I'd love a GA precision, but that'd set a guy back 4-5k.

As others have said the Tikka t3 is an awesome rifle. I have a 308 and a 300wsm. The 308 would be my go too but the wife claimed it so I bought the 300wsm because I got a smoking deal. The 308 is more accurate for me by a fair margin despite my best efforts. Very solid rifles for the price.

The tikka makes a good rifle that said the only bolt actions I own are Savages and a Ruger American. I like the fact I can work on my savages without paying a gunsmith and my 10 yo son can shoot the Ruger accurately out to 200 yards out of the box.

Edit I forgot a caliber.

If I could only have one it would prob be a 30.06. I don't own a 30.06 because I can own more then one. I also don't hunt big game! Deer and Hogs are my big game.

Thanks for the replies guys. It is always interesting to hear your opinions on what you would choose.

Already have it, AR-10, mine is a Remington R-25 .308. I've shot five shot 3" groups at 500 yards with Hornady American whitetail. There's a few things I would like to change out like the trigger, but overall it's a solid rifle. Also she's a proven killer!

Last few years when I pick up a rifle it's always been my H&R 35 Whelen I purchased for our "primitive" season. Really love that little rifle and big caliber. Shoot it out to 300 at the range and got a deer at 269 with it, I really have no need or desire for shots any further than that around here.

.308 bolt, compact rifle, not sure what brand. I do like Tikka. That being said I love my .257 Roberts bolt (Remington) customized on Mannlicher stock for deer.

AR-10/ LR 308 (M110). 338 Lapua would be my top choice on just effective range/power/long range accuracy as a cartridge. But AR style MSR is just incredibly versatile and you can do so much with it. New furniture, trigger swaps, swap complete uppers etc. You can't beat it with a bat. My buddy has one and shoots .5 MOA groups with it all day.

308 itself.. cheap, available anywhere, and it works. There are some new alum tipped projectiles that have a bc over .6 which will give even more reach than most would typically expect from 308.

CZ 550 or Tikka T3 light. CZ is a rifle that can be handed down like any rifle my grandfather gave me and is out of the box sub moa. The Tikka T3 light is sub moa and is a rifle that won't mind being banged around a little. I would hate to bang around my CZ though. So if your rough on guns go Tikka T3 light otherwise CZ is beautiful and accurate.
