I have not been out west in 20 years. Me and a friend finally got drawn for early muzzle-loader season in south west Colorado. It took four years. This will be a do it yourself; public land adventure. To help make things a bit easier we did rent a small cabin to stay in. I have hunted and tent camped before so it will be nice to have a solid roof over us with water and electric.
It has been a fun summer researching and upgrading some of my clothing and gear. Everything that I’ve purchased besides an elk call I can use chasing whitetails in my home state. I also have become a member of Elk101. There is a whole lot of good info on Elk101.
I have been a Beast member since 2012. I have never killed an elk but was surprised how much I already knew and how much I have learned on the Beast from Dan and other members. So many things I thought was specific to deer can cross over to elk. Reading maps and thermals are just a couple things I have gotten better at since becoming a beast member and they are important to elk hunting.
I hope to update this post while in Colorado.
Open to any advice, tips or tricks.
You can also PM me if you want to share any knowledge about unit, 71,72,73,711. Thanks

Re: Colorado Muzzle Loader 2017
I have a lot of hunting gear but I have always been a low budget hunter.
I purchased several new items for this trip that I wish I had bought years ago. Here are just a few.
ASAT backpack.
Predator camouflage.
Wicked saw.
Kenetrek leg gaiters.
150 quart cooler also using it as a tote.
Keen hiking shoes.
Cabelas rain suit.
Minus33 base layers.
Merino wool hiking socks.

So, how did this hunt go? Did you get an elk? Tell us about the hunt even if you didn't get one. Maybe we can help you with your next one.
