Deadline/Dates for Big Game Applications

Unread postby Whitetailaddict » Sat Jan 20, 2018 2:02 am

I haven't seen a thread that was dedicated to compiling application dates and deadlines for big game hunting. I thought this would be helpful for those of us planning or thinking about doing a big game hunt somewhere. I will post some info that I have and I'm hoping others will add to it. Ultimately if we could come up with a monthly guide for people in a condensed format I think it would be very helpful and then we would only have to update it if/when state rules change. Please feel free to add or correct any data that appears to be incorrect.

Colorado
Permit application deadline: Early April. OTC licenses available in mid-July and Leftover Limited Licenses available Early August
Type of system: Preference point
Applications can be submitted by mail or online
Other info: Preference points cost $40/species.

I don't have a lot of info on CO because I was a little confused reading through their regs. I believe a hunter needs to purchase a $651 license ($13 is non-refundable) in order to get a PP. Hopefully someone else can add to this state info.

Montana
Permit application deadline: Mid-March
Application begins: Mid-Jan
Type of System: Bonus Point
Other info: Must purchase hunting license prior to lottery draw. Bonus points are $20. NR bow license is $10.

From what I've heard although Montana is not OTC you are very likely to get a tag if you apply or will not have to accumulate a lot of bonus points. Licenses can be expensive.

I know there are some states I missed that I don't have not looked into yet so please post info if you have any. Again I hope this thread will be helpful for those looking to hunt in any of these states. Most of the info was geared towards elk hunting but many other species have similar requirements.

There are some changes in Colorado this year. I read it kind of fast and my memory is kind of fuzzy. I remember that applications by mail have been discontinued. You have to apply by phone or online now.

I also seem to remember that you don't actually pay for a tag until you get it in the draw. This is fuzzy, but that's what I seem to remember. This came to me in an email and I read it fast.

It should all be posted on their web site soon.

Ok thanks for the update. I'll try to update the Colorado post when I can find it on their website.
