Re: snowshoe hares.
I have the same question.
We have a place in Shawano county and they used to be come back in the 80'a.
I have not see track nor rabbit in I don't know how many years, yet the season is open all year.
I know they are suppose to be cyclical but never saw any since way back.
Interesting though, is I would rarely see cottontails but they are more abundant then ever before.
Interesting to know why....

I don't see any hares in northeast Monroe county ever, even though it looks like hare habitat. Too many predators I'm guessing

Re: snowshoe hares.
They are in small pockets and where they are located population seems up.
When I say up, by no means the numbers we had 15-20 years ago. Not even close.
Most places I am finding them is extremely wet most of the year.....where the wolves stay out.
Had one area 3-4 years back with a decent population....would drive back roads at dusk with family in spring and we would count double digit snowshoes a night along the ditches eating. Plus deer numbers were good.
Wolves moved in 2 years back in this area .....bunny pop took a nose dive big time.

I have lived north of Marinette for about 9 years and have never seen a snowshoe hare here. We had a lot of cottontails around untill this year. Now I cant find a rabbit track on my land.

Re: snowshoe hares.
I see them up in Vilas County quite a bit. During gun season we actually had one sitting on the back porch of the cabin resting out of the wind a few days. Amazed how much he turned white in those couple of days. Pretty funny seeing them all white during years with very little snow on the ground. Would think the predators really clean them up then.

Really nice to know they are still there. The only track I did find was in a tagelder swamp where it crossed a logging road. The shame is , a coyote was on it's track. I didn't get into any spruce swamps but that is where there were the most.

Re: snowshoe hares.
Have really good population in North Central Wisconsin. Probably one of the better years I have seen in a long time. I haven't been carrying the gun for about 2 years now, because I let my kids do the shooting now. I think it is funny watching them trying to hit the hare doing mach 2.

It seems better in NE WIs. than NW WIs. I don't know anyone that sees snowshoes in NW WIs.

What is the furthest south you saw a snowshoe in WIs?. I ask cause I was in Washington co. and and saw some really big rabbit tracks. Almost had to be from a snowshoe.
