Theres A Hare In There
The varying hare. Once in a while people ask me about them. They are rare, I don't like telling where I find them. They aren't around like they used to be. They like remote hemlock forests. I got a crappy pic of one yesterday while I was deer hunting. They're white now, with no snow to hide in. Look close, it's a crappy cell pic.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

Where are you in the 10 year cycle? Peak, valley, rising, or falling?

There aren't enough for me to personally notice a cycle. I'm seeing nothing but decline from when I was a kid.

We have the same issue in WI. The habitat isn't what it use to be. There are still peaks but nothing like years ago.

Saw one in Ohio white as snow. My 26 year old brother has never saw one till then. He was amazed at how much bigger they are than a cottontail. Cool pic Spy

You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Interesting. I would have thought otherwise. I know they pose a problem at JFK airport.

Re: Theres A Hare In There
I'm assuming they are what we call "snowhoe" rabbits here? There are so many here, didn't realize they would be rare anywhere. It's like hunting snowballs right now here with no snow.

Big demand for snowshoe rabbit foot hair in the fly tying industry right now. Don't know if they use wild or farm raised rabbits though.

Re: Theres A Hare In There
U.P. Man, where in Upper Mich are you? I ask cause I have not seen a snowshoe in 10 years in northern WIs. I have never seen one in southern WIs. but was in a swamp in S.E Wis. last week and saw some darn big rabbit tracks and swear it had to be from a snowshoe. I would love to take my 18 yr old son for snowshoe.

Re: Theres A Hare In There
I went to Maine with my Dad when I was a teenager with a group of guys and all our beagles to hunt them. Talk about a fun trip. We had a blast. But you better have your dogs in darn good shape before you try it.
