Trophy Squirrel
Back in mid November, I was deer hunting one morning on a long narrow field. About mid morning I noticed something on the other side of the field, maybe 75 yards away. It was a squirrel. It was in the shade and I thought to myself, that's the biggest grey squirrel I've ever seen. I got my binos and looked closer. While I was watching him, he stood up on his back legs and was eating soybeans that were missed by the combine. As he stood up I noticed orange on his belly. It was a fox squirrel. Not only was he big, he had a white face, ears and tail. The fur on his back and sides were gray mixed with white. He fed for a while and wondered back into the bedding area I was watching. I thought, I'll be back for him.
Today I took my grandson squirrel hunting. It was going to be warm today and sunny but we had a strong south wind blowing before sunrise. I was worried how the squirrel would move and rightly so. We seen nothing for the first hour and a half. We would sneak through the woods for a bit and stop, sit, and wait for a while before moving on. On the way we passed a trail camera I had out and I took it down. The next time we sat, I told Eli to not let me forget it. After a while we got up to move and of course neither of us remembered. When we got to the next spot to sit, I remembered and told Eli to sit tight I'd be back. As I got back to where I left the camera, I heard Eli shoot twice. When I returned I asked if he killed one. He said he missed and he was pretty sure it was a squirrel but it was white. Getting the details, I knew the squirrel had to be in a tree close to use and we began searching. We found him hiding on a limb about 25' high. Eli shot him. When I checked him out, I seen it was the same squirrel I seen from deer season. Great kill. I guess we'll mount this one.

Re: Trophy Squirrel
Reminds me of a red squirrle I killed about 20 years ago. I will see if I can find a photo. It weighed 7.5 lbs and had like a 20 inch girth. I have a photo somewhere of it next to my size 13 felt pack boot. Never seen another like it. Too bad we ate it!

Re: Trophy Squirrel
I call them Booner squirrels. Usually see those on remote marsh hardwood islands where big bucks hang out.
Congrats to your grandson. Should make a great mount.

That is a biggin' around my neck of the woods they are common to get that big and fatter. Acorns galore and crops all over. I used to have a blast sniping them with the 22

Re: Trophy Squirrel
Cool, that's a fat sucker. Those things get big. Yesterday afternoon we went back out and killed a grey squirrel. I was disappointed on how small it was. LOL Those fox squirrels are trophys indeed

I wondered the same thing. I wanted to believe he's just old, but I don't know, he had a huge set of nuts on him.
