Re: Coyote attack in New York
concealed carry would of made stopping this attack a lot easier with no one getting bit.

Re: Coyote attack in New York
Sure would have, coyotes have been getting more and more brazen in NY as of late. There was an instance where one injured a woman badly in upstate, Moreau State Park i believe. DEC went to put it down and while searching it charged the officer, he ended up shooting it before it made it to him. I'm pretty sure he was seated eating lunch on a trail and it charged.

Re: Coyote attack in New York
My cousin was sitting at the top of a ravine looking down it and had one bolt right to him along tyhe edge of the Ravine. Good thing it was shotgun season and not bow. But he got it mounted and is one of the biggest coyotes I have ever seen.

I'm from Upstate NY originally. I remember a story from years back that the DEC believed that the Coyotes had cross bred with Grey wolves as they migrated into NY from Canada. Article probably was written a good 30-35 years ago.

Re: Coyote attack in New York
I have trouble believing anything from major news media or fox news, especially wildlife related. Not saying it didn't happen, just wonder if there were any other circumstances leading to it, or if anything is over exaggerated. Major news media is not known for having any wildlife specialist reporters... Don't see how a gun would have helped either. I wouldn't want someone shooting at a coyote near my kids. Sounds like a flesh wound is the worst that happened.
NY should have year round coyote hunting. I lived upstate for a while and still have family there and there are way too many coyotes. Big ones too. Coyote-people conflicts are bound to happen where there are that many people and that many coyotes. We have the same problem with bears and people in WV, and a few years ago a guy was "attacked". But the real story is he was walking dogs off leash and his dogs attacked the bears cubs and the sow was defending her cubs. With coyotes just now having pups, I am wondering if the coyote was defending it's territory or it's den with pups.

Some do. Some don't. I just might...

I agree with you about the liberal media... But as far as if the story is true a gun should not be used to dispatch an animal attacking someone? What better reason. A gun is a tool, its the not the deadly human killer the media has made it out to be. I am no more worried about someone shooting the coyote with a gun than I am with killing it with a bat. If my kids were there and I was not I would hope someone was there with a gun to stop the threat. If I was there, I would not have to hope, cause I go everywhere with my glock with one in the pipe and 15 right behind it. And everyone around me not trying to cause harm is safer because of that. It was not all that long ago that a country singer was attacked by coyotes and killed.

There is a documentary about the crossbreeding. It’s called coywolf. Pretty interesting studies they are doing on an island just north of ny in Canada I believe. Blood samples of some pups have shown both species dna if I recall correctly.
The clash with any animal and humans is inevitable. We are the only creature that has no population control and land isn’t a growing commodity.
Also within that Doc it shows the increase of coyote population in major cities. When it was published coyotes were just arriving in ny city. One group of study was right in Chicago. It’s was interesting to see how they traveled at night using train tracks and ditches.

Re: Coyote attack in New York
I believe the coyote tested positive for rabies. I agree with Dan, more guns are the solution to many issues, not less guns.
I am very weary of coyotes living in the country, my girls are both small and love playing outside, a big coyote could run off with them no problem. While it is extremely rare and statistically won’t happen, I am still very cautious. I had an encounter with a coyote a few years back that would go 50 pounds no problem. I almost got a shot with my bow but he crossed my walking trail and knew something was up.

Re: Coyote attack in New York
Coyotes are one of the only animals in every state except Hawaii. They are also one of the only animals that adjust litter size based on mortality rates, which in many cases is due to hunting pressure. It's interesting, its more prevalent in coyotes and dingos but occurs with wolf populations as well. Apparently they breed at younger ages and produce larger litters as hunting pressure increases. It's worth looking up if you're not familiar. The cockroach of the dog world.
