2010 Souther WI Duck Opener

Unread postby Sam Ubl » Fri Sep 24, 2010 4:29 am

The weekend is finally almost upon us. While I feel like I'm missing out on some prime time early season deer activity with the bow, the southern Wisconsin duck opener has been an on-going tradition for 8 years now with some of my closest friends.

To the White River Marsh, we go.

SEASON OPENS OCTOBER 2nd

For me it is a GREAT day to be in a bow stand. I say this because I live close to the Mississippi river and when duck season rolls around the bucks tend to move away from the river bottoms to get away from all the shooting. Some years it is the best day to be in my treestand :D shootem up and move them bucks away from the river for me please!! GOOD LUCK to all you duck hunters.

What a great time we had on the White River Marsh. We found a dynamite spot and watched thousands of ducks at a time all morning and evening. Funny... Those ducks are so pretty right after the kill, but by the end of the day, their not so photo worthy.

I did manage to capture a picture of Christie and I on her first ever duck hunt now that she's completed Hunters Safety with 100% on both the field and written exam.

We also came across this cow that had broke through the pasture fence. Her sides and belly were a little cut up from the barbwire fence the strange farmer was using. At first she was in the middle of the road, than we used the car to move her to the side, but as soon as we pulled forward to go up the farmers driveway and let him know, she bolted in a cow-like fashion across the street into the woods of the public White River Marsh hunting grounds. . . Someone might shoot the biggest damn deercow in the woods this season.

I was out in Rome pond marsh with Chad hunting deer opening day of duck... I could of shot 50 ducks from my stand if I had a shotgun.
It was interesting to watch the ducks head for the pond. Even with it being opening day it appeared most of the ducks avoided the decoy spreads.
