Watin' For The Cold

Unread postby Kraftd » Tue Dec 06, 2016 3:42 am

Waiting for the cold and snow to hit to get back at it for deer with the bow, decided to get out and chase a few birds around. I'm not much for sitting and calling, 95% of my waterfowling is stalking and jump shooting. Same deal here.

Goose was a 150 yard belly crawl in four inches of water. Should have had my two, but hands weren't working great after spending most the stalk in near freezing water and got behind the second bird. Biggest goose I've ever killed. Breasts are huge. Thinking they may be tough so I'm going to try some goose prosciutto.

Yesterday morning took a buddy new to hunting into a hidden pond on public. We were breaking skim ice paddling up a ditch to get there, but there were 8 mallards on the pond we were able to get in on. He kind of flock shot when they busted out and missed but I managed to drop these three in three shots. which was a confidence builder as I've shot pretty bad so far this year. Ended up getting him a Shoveler at another pond though.

May get out once or twice more for waterfowl, but time to try and get one more deer in the freezer.

Congrats on the mallards and goose!

Kinda reverse on me for duck hunting... y'all have to get some cold and snow up there before we'll have any numbers of ducks here ;)

Here's hoping it works for both of us! So far our season has been a few birds move in, stays warm, they get shot at and move out, next little temp dip a few more move in. Northern IL is still pen for a couple of weeks, thinking there may be one more good push.

Having too much fun, need to get back after deer, but with the antlerless hunt spent one more weekend chasing waterfowl.
