Cattails or Corn ?
I read a little survival tip the other day. Apparantly when cattail heads are young ,b4 they develope into brown furry heads ,they are edible. They are compared to corn in the way you have to peel back to expose the inner part.I guess they taste like cucumbers.

You can eat the roots too.
You cannot invade mainland America. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.

Ditto on what slayer said. On an episode of Survivorman he eats the bulbous roots of cattails and says they are edible (I do believe he barfs them back up in a short time though...evidently they taste terrible). Would be easier to just kill a critter and have steak tartar.

I have eaten cattail roots... They are awful. They should not be listed as edible.

Re: Cattails or Corn ?
I have eaten cattails several times. Actually they taste just like cucumbers just as others have mentioned. The trick is to get them when they are just starting to grow. You pull the stem right from the ground, peel off the green outer part and eat the white center.

Don't try eating them in fall/winter or it will be like eating a mouthful of feathers!
