About the same time last year, I got my truck stuck in some terrain very similar to what he described. I had my six-year-old and eight-year-old sons with me (similar to dan's story). It wasn't quite as remote as him but not that much different. I had about a 13 mile hike out to where I would find some dwellings. Luckily after 3 mile hike out of the Bush r0ad turning onto a primary bush road, I ran into a trapper. Sometimes you have to make your own luck.

If he could drive in, I would have walked out first thing in the morning. The walk wouldn't have been that bad since the snow was packed. I still don't understand why he chose to bushwhack out of there. That was a huge risk.

That's pretty crazy. Glad he made it. Ya I probably would of started walking the next day and would of used a bullet for food.

"I think about it differently, now. I’ll hunt only in familiar woods, and I intend to buy a satellite phone. And I’ll always carry extra fuel and food from now on."

annnnnd tell someone where you will be hunting, maybe????

If you are stuck or hurt on a road, you never leave the road. The only way I would ever leave the road is if I knew the land really well and knew there was a bigger road near by. Why he didn't walk out , I don't know.

I spent the night in my minivan during the fall of 2013 in ks when a creek flash flooded a few hours after I crossed it. It was a long night

Our area is much different than up North. But with 180k acres of forest land that I hunt, you could get lost. I make sure I take a gps, phone (even if it wont call out for gps), extra batteries, fire starter, knife, extra ammo. If I had to stay a night or two, I could easily have fire and food. It would be nothing to shoot one of the million squirrels. I have yet to hunt alone, but if I did, I would text someone my gps coordinates of the area I would be in and re-text new coordinates if I decide to move areas.
