About the same time last year, I got my truck stuck in some terrain very similar to what he described. I had my six-year-old and eight-year-old sons with me (similar to dan's story). It wasn't quite as remote as him but not that much different. I had about a 13 mile hike out to where I would find some dwellings. Luckily after 3 mile hike out of the Bush r0ad turning onto a primary bush road, I ran into a trapper. Sometimes you have to make your own luck.

If he could drive in, I would have walked out first thing in the morning. The walk wouldn't have been that bad since the snow was packed. I still don't understand why he chose to bushwhack out of there. That was a huge risk.

That's pretty crazy. Glad he made it. Ya I probably would of started walking the next day and would of used a bullet for food.

"I think about it differently, now. I’ll hunt only in familiar woods, and I intend to buy a satellite phone. And I’ll always carry extra fuel and food from now on."

annnnnd tell someone where you will be hunting, maybe????

If you are stuck or hurt on a road, you never leave the road. The only way I would ever leave the road is if I knew the land really well and knew there was a bigger road near by. Why he didn't walk out , I don't know.

I spent the night in my minivan during the fall of 2013 in ks when a creek flash flooded a few hours after I crossed it. It was a long night

Our area is much different than up North. But with 180k acres of forest land that I hunt, you could get lost. I make sure I take a gps, phone (even if it wont call out for gps), extra batteries, fire starter, knife, extra ammo. If I had to stay a night or two, I could easily have fire and food. It would be nothing to shoot one of the million squirrels. I have yet to hunt alone, but if I did, I would text someone my gps coordinates of the area I would be in and re-text new coordinates if I decide to move areas.

I’m so glad that he survived and is doing alright. We can all think about the things that he should’ve had with him which he didn’t and things he should’ve done which he didn’t or things that he did which he shouldn’t have. Although he made several mistakes, we also see that he did numerous things right which is why he didn’t die.

He didn’t panic or lose hope. He at least had a little food rather than not having any and he conserved it rather than just eating it all at one. He carried means for making fires and was proficient in making them and staying warm. He was able to supply his water requirements. He had more ammunition than most hunters carry for a short hunt. Despite his loss of weight he didn’t give up hope or his desire to survive and see his family again. He must also have been physically fit before this hunt since even after being without food he was able to walk down some rough terrain.

Lots of “why didn’t he do this” questions. ...like shoot a deer or grouse with one of the 35 rounds...or walk the trail out to the road....I mean even if it took him 3-4 days to walk out...better than 3 weeks....or don’t sink your truck to the floor boards. Idk

I find it amazing that he didn't run out of gas and the trucks battery died when he was running it at intervals for heat.

If you don't have a winch mounted on the truc at least throw in a heavy weight come along to get on stuck with.

Even a high lift jack jack is better than empty hands.

With our trucks all 4x4's we carry 2 pair of tire chains enough for all four wheels. Can jack the truck up throw some woods found dead falls under the chained up tires.

I say pure city slicker who needs to do some reading on survival before even hunting in his fenced in back yard

:D Al

When you fail to plan, you plan to fail..

Knowingly going out of cell range with no map, no compass and/or no GPS. He learned a hard lesson.

This guy sounds like a champ. That is persistence. I’m glad to hear he’s back home. I may have missed it but I wonder how miles off the main road he was? Walking 15-25 miles in a day is very doable if you start early and keep at it. Bushwacking gets old real quick even when you know where your headed.
