Solo camping trips....do you do it? What gear do you use?
With 2 young kids, a full time job, and a spouse that works full time, time just seems to keep going faster and faster...that's life I'm sure.
In summer, I hardly spend any time in the woods and I find myself wanting to do some solo camping trips back into the mountain for a day or two just to get away from everything. I want to get a pack frame and a single-man tent. Any suggestions? What else do you use?

Dor has had a few good posts about his Elk trips and believe he had a pretty good checklist with quality, useable equipment...
Maybe do a search.

One of the best thing you'll ever get yourself if you start doing these on the regular. I have one and they are great. The one I have is 2 lbs. just make sure you bging a foam pad. You still need it for warmth, not comfort.

Re: Solo camping trips....do you do it? What gear do you us
A good sturdy tent, flashlight, wet weather gear, cold weather gear, WATER, Some sort of food with high calories, a metal canteen cup, A nine volt battery with steel wool, more than one cigarette lighter, first aid kit, extra charged batteries, compass, map, chem. lights, flourescent material like a bright orange shirt, 550 cord, hand ax, knives, Plastic garbage or shopping bags to keep your things dry, a hand gun with ammo, and a positive attitude. Thats all I can really think of. I would pack and prepare more for emergencies rather than comfort. Especially going solo. Thats just me though.

Re: Solo camping trips....do you do it? What gear do you us
I have the stuff to do it but didnt get too last year
Eberlestock x2 - doubles as my every day pack and can carry an assault, clothes, water, food, knives...
Tent - mountain hardware one man - found on ebay cheap, like $50
Pack Stove - MSR Pocket Rocket(rip off version), bought on ebay $15
Pack Cookware - Found on ebay - $15
30 Degree Mummy Bag - Amazon $50
Towl - brand new car sponge type chamois - $5
Essentials - flint, homemade tinder, super glue, bandaids, antihistamine, ibuprofen
Need yet - water filtration system
Food - do you own a dehydrator? you can make a ton of things from dried out sausage to eggs to soup. Then on the mountain just add boiling water.
My clothes are always a system consisting of sporting fabrics like sitka and wool.
I might actually be putting together a trip early fall to do this in PA with a couple of my friends. I know we have never met but you are welcome to join.

Re: Solo camping trips....do you do it? What gear do you us
Thanks for the lists everyone and the invite JLH. I'm going to start with some single overnight trips to get my feet wet and then I want to plan a multi-day trip up in the mountain area of Potter County.
I do have a dehydrator and that's an awesome idea for packing in alot of lightweight food. I would like to take one of those fishing rods that pack up really small and try to catch my dinner...I know there are alot of stocked and native trout up in that area. I'm also thinking of taking some canned venison, homemade strawberry jam, jerky, and leeks.
When I tell people about my desire to go up into the mountain by myself, they just can't understand why I would want to do that. "Aren't you afraid of bears?" "What will you do with all of your time?" "Won't you be bored?"
Come to think of it, I get the same kind of questions in archery season when I basically live in a tree. I guess you either get it, or you don't.

By myself or with a group, I'll take the same stuff. Of course there's not much of anywhere you can "pack in" around here. I like comfort and as an old guy, I have my ways
