Re: Walleye Challenge! I Need Your Help!
Actually walleye are in the "perch family".
Regarding the big pike.....if you happen to land a big one 12lbs plus.....just because it isnt a legal fish in the tourney doesn't mean it won't be fun to hook into.

Re: Walleye Challenge! I Need Your Help!
Pike is what I fish for all the time. I love pike fishing.
I just hate getting one when I'm fishing mono or flourocarbon, it breaks in those toothy critters. If I get a pike on 12lb test I'd be happy.

A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

You have a whole of buds fishing with you this saturday? Maybe everyone can try a little different thing to see what the fish are going after.

Re: Walleye Challenge! I Need Your Help!
I have caught em in both, but better luck with sand/mud with rock... If u can find that bottom structure with under water point or break you should be in a decent spot.

Re: Walleye Challenge! I Need Your Help!
For daytime walleye fishing.....did I mention it can be tough? ..... would say they cruise the mud flats.
If you know of any good perch spots in deeper water over mud these can be good for walleye too. The fish may roam in schools.......a few flags then dead for a while and then cruise back thru. Pretty much roaming over mud during the daylight.
If on a point off the 1st break try your bait at that bottom elevation out over the 2nd break. Make sense? If on a point that is 15' deep at the point or tip then the bottom drops to 25' say. Try some of your baits at the 15' level over the 25' depth reletively close (say 50 yards) to the point. As the fish cruise in and off that point they will pretty much stay at the 15' level.
Elsewhere, like when over mud flats, fish near the bottom during the day. At night when fish come up to feed I'm not afraid to "let the minnow go" and fish a couple of feet off bottom.

Re: Walleye Challenge! I Need Your Help!
There were 1500 people, so that's 7,500 tip ups in the water. The largest walleye weighed in was 5 lbs. Most were 2 or 3 lbs. Our group, of nine people caught only three small walleye...I caught none. It was a tough day for walleye biting. The hours of 7am to 3pm aren't the best for walleye. I know some guys that stayed till dark, and that when they started biting.
But thanks for all the advice, I still think it will help me the next time I'm actually fishing for walleye, and not in a stupid contest...

Re: Walleye Challenge! I Need Your Help!
I hear ya on fishing walleye during the day. It can be tough over here too.
But any day on the ice with good buds beats a day at work by a mile. Good luck next time.

Let's see, plenty of beer, moose tenderloin, trout dip, venison ham(you gotta try this stuff), smoked venison bacon, venison sausage, venison wraps, and good friends. It was pretty good fun.

Re: Walleye Challenge! I Need Your Help!
Tip ups, regular winter line to swivel, for leader 6 pound fluorocarbon, I use Berkeley.then I tie small treble hook to leader, I use shiners as bait, depending on size of bait split shot Foot above hook, my leader length is usually my arm spand so 6 foot or so can go shorter though! Jigging I use 4 pound power pro, it sounds light for walleye but its the best line out there, it's braided, and works well for hook sets, I use rapala jigging raps, lindy darters, chubby darters by lindy, just switch it up, and drill tons of holes, and move until u find active fish, just because ur marking a fish doesn't mean it's gonna bite! Good luck
