Ice Fishing Extravaganza

Unread postby rutnbuck » Thu Jan 23, 2014 3:50 am

Any beast members going to Brainerd, MN for the 24th annual ICE FISHING EXTRAVAGANZA? Been going the last 4 years, always a great time. Extreme Ice Fishing at its finest. Good Luck to anyone who is brave enough to handle the elements.

I would love to see some pictures.

Go to icefishing.org and go to 2014 photos. It was a fun time, but didn't catch anything. The guy that won caught the fish by us, almost 5 pound walleye, caught it about fifteen minutes before the contest closed. Well over 10,000 fisherman competing for 3 hours. A must do for any avid ice angler.

LOL...

You couldn't pay me enough to fish in that crowd! How long do you have to wait in line to access the lake and get off?

I guess it's a good time drinking with the buds though... Depending on how persistant law enforcement is at that time.

Looks like it would be different though not my style. I usually drill 50-75 holes or more and that would be all but impossible there with that crowd.

They actually have a pretty good bus system in place, two big parking areas to the north and south of the lake and at least 20-30 school buses running from 8 in the morning until everyone is off the ice. Contest runs from noon to 3, little bit of a line to get off the ice at the end but getting on the ice is easy.

Brad its not really fishing but more of a charity event and everyone hopes to get lucky and snag a big one to win the truck or place in the top 150 to win a prize. The prize list is pretty impressive, the spread out the big prizes, 100 place has been an ice castle fish house the past few years and last place (150th) is usually a atv or snowmobile. It is a little different, you can't have a shelter out there or drill your own holes, they do drill 20K holes the night before so you have a lot of options. Mostly its one big party on the ice and everyone is there to hang out and have a good time.

Back in 2011 I took third with the largest walleye, won a 12,000 sled. I fish 50 to 60 feet of water for the walleyes...crazy but they hang out down there. Very well organized event, very little delays if any.

Giving this one a bump, any other beasts going to be there? For those of you that haven't heard about this one I think they have the record for largest ice fishing contest in the world, super warm this weekend so maybe we can break the record. Usually around 10,000 fishermen show up. They have a pretty impressive prize list as well.

A good article here, I was there the year it hit -40 with the wind chill, it was borderline scary cold that day but we survived.
