2010-2011 Ice Fishing Reports

Unread postby DropTyne » Fri Dec 17, 2010 9:00 am

I have not gotten out yet, but thought I would start the thread to see what others have been doing. With the holidays and work I haven't found time to get out myself but a few friends of mine have been having a little luck with the Walleyes on Pewaukee Lake (The lake where I cut my teeth).
I do a fair amount of great lakes Ice Fishing so I still have to wait for some good ice out there.

Anyone else doing any good?

Was out yesterday for a little while, I came out late but a couple of my friends ended up with 30 nice gills, six lil pike, and one big breakoff. Was a nice day to be out and there was about 8-10 inches of ice.

Things appear promising on Michigan's Saginaw Bay this year- still not fishable, but skim ice across the entire bay. It won't be long before the canaries are out on their snowmobiles and quads  . For those of you unfamiliar with it, SagBay is a huge bay of Lake Huron, between the thumb and the rest of the mitten. Here's the latest satellite shot showing 'er frozen, but that's very thin ice and we've got a while to go yet... still, this is relatively early for ice all the way across.

Do you have a link for the latest areial photos? Is it just for Saginaw Bay or can it be relocated?

HH- it is for the entire Great Lakes region, you select the Lake you want to view. You may go days before cloud cover lets you see the exact spot you are interested in, but IMO its worth the wait. I'll put up a new topic with the link for all to see. 8-)

Well, I got out a few time before christmas and will be out friday and sat this weekend. So far it has been slow for me. Sorry, no pics but so far I have caught a couple browns, a couple splake, a 5lb whitefish, a 30" northern, some perch, and some smelt all in the same general area.
That kind of variety is why I got hooked on the big lake. You never know what you are going to pull up when you set the hook and never know how big it might be.

I lost a monster something or other last week on a tip-up. I had a 7-8" smelt on it and the fish I lost left gashes(from one bite) that were 4+ inches apart. I am guessing either a big laker or brown.

Hilts, that's an excellent variety- I can see why you are hooked. I'm thinking the lost monster was a big laker- bet you'd have loved to get a good look at it. 8-)

Fished the "kettle" on nagawicka lake in Waukesha County (se wi) and we hammered the gills but only kept 14. Lots of little ones. They were really deep too we were pulling them up from 25ft or so. Had to reel them in slowly, the pressure changes from bringing them up too quickly killed a few small fish. One two gills the eyes actually "popped" out I've never seen anything like it.

I got out last friday and caught 1 brown and missed a few coho, whitefish, and trout. I think it was becuase I was trying to sight fish in 10 ft of water and was off on my hook set timing. It was fun to watch them though.

Sat was too windy, I gave it an hour and the hardware on my shack didn't like the 25+mph wind gusts. So I packed up. I didn't really appreciate the 30 below windchill either  .

I got out yesterday afternoon for a few hours and ended up with 4 browns and a splake.

Hopefully, this weekend I can get the kid out and get him his "smelt slayer" title back from last winter :) .
