I don’t target northerns, but I know some people that do. Seems like all the guys that target them set a “mine field” of tip ups and chase flags. Good tactic.

Spearing is fairly popular around here.

And the new “in thing” is catching northerns on cheap hot dogs. It works

I didn’t make it out last weekend but will be taking the fam out this weekend. I heard of a crappie bite and also a walleye bite. Will give one of them a shot!

Saw this one on an ice fishing page.

Trying to decide if I want to go fishing saturday or take a weekend trip to the camper to scout and put out tip ups at night for walleyes. Leaning towards option 2

Hot dogs are definitely a trend right now. The new questions online will be: What flavor hot dogs are you guys using? Regular? Anyone using stadium brats or jalapeño cheddar? If I’m going for trophy fish do you think half a kielbasa is too big?

;)

Maybe a piece of bacon wrapped around a large treble hook would outproduce the fun dogs...

Joking aside, I’m home now. Wife and my youngest came yesterday afternoon. Fun was had by all. We went home with 14 crappies. Fresh fish for supper!

Coldsnap outdoors makes some dandy rod holders. Somehow snagged a perch minnow in the gut. Luck has not been on my side on the ice lately.

It’s been a while since Tyler (tcjohnsonjacks) and I went ice fishing, but we’re on the lake and they’re biting! In 2.5 hours, 9 bites, 7 landed, 5 crappies in the pail. Lots of night left.

Going to spend the night in the shanty then drop off close to 100 lbs of venison trimmings at the locker plant in the morning. 40 cents a pound to grind and package, and they supply the fat. That’s a no brainer.

Just put #6 in the pail while I was typing...

Zipped out to Pewaukee after work and picked up a few right around dusk, seems like they're starting to move out to midwinter spots. Guys out with half tons and SUVs but I fish out of a hub shelter so I usually walk out. 10" where I was. Couple gills over 8" but most in the 7ish range. ImageImage

Had the day off, so out solo yesterday for some perch. All dinks. Nice sunny day, but High pressure slowed the bite. Temp upper teens to 20 mid afternoon and ENE wind kicked up. FYI Putting up a taking down a hub shanty by yourself is a bit of a chore, but I managed. Bad day of fishing better than a good day at work.

Me and my high school buddies hit up the Waubay area of SD. The bite right now is absolutely terrible. Wardens checked us last night and one joked to the other “want to see what a fish looks like?” And pointed to my walleye in the pail. Fat 18.5” from Bitter Lake.

My friends tried 8 different spots on South Waubay yesterday and never even caught a perch

Wardens said the cold weather completely shut them down and they still haven’t recovered. We’re going to run and gun today, hopefully things pick up.
