What kind of shed dog do you have?

Unread postby EmbeddedHunter » Tue Oct 30, 2018 5:58 am

I've been looking into getting a hunting dog mainly for waterfowl but I've also been hoping to use him on the side as a shed dog. My personal choice im looking at getting is a labradoodle. What type of dog do you have or would like to have for shed hunting? If you got some good pics of these master hunting did i would love to see those as well!

Catahoula Leopard Hound. Blood tracking/shed dog. Has webbed feat, could duck hunt. Had a chocolate lab waterfowl dog for 13 years. Catahoula’s demeanor is pretty similar to a lab’s, except my dog is as vocal as a husky. Doesn’t bark for no reason, but will bark when he wants something. Would have to train that out for waterfowl.

Good lookin dog. is this dog relatively new to this shed hunting? I ask because you all seen the sheds prior to the dog getting to them and wasn't sure if this was a training session where you planted them or you were just lucky enough to spot them before the dog.

The dog was relatively new, he was fresh back from being sent out for professional training. But, training never stops if you want a hound to be good. So rather than pick up a shed you see laying in a field, better to use the opportunity to help keep the pup sharp.

Ted is self trained. He's far from a great shed dog, but years of encouragement and practice has been a great joy in my life

It's the joys of getting out into the woods that really matters. If you and your pup are outdoors having a good time you can't go wrong!

My old GSP was a fantastic shed hunter/tracker/ bird dog. They are good for ducks in warmer climate But you cant go wrong with a lab in your situation. You can cross train dogs no problem. and if you find a dog with a good prey drive you can really get some stuff done with that dog if you give it a job. I have a new GSP and she will be a year old this month and I'm putting her through the paces but the crazy thing about those dogs is that when you work with them they pick right back right up where they left off after training session. really no reinforcement in training required. just crazy smart unbelievably tough and athletic and cover tons of ground quick but you need to be able to have lots of patience bc they can get into stuff the second you turn your head when they are young but great with kids really friendly but I recommend a training collar. Like Nigel Tufnal said in Spinal Tap, "this one goes to 11" and they do just everything to the max . My nick name for the new dog is "Fur Missile".
Good luck with your search.

Get a Black Lab. Cant go wrong. Mine has found 99 deer sheds and 17 moose in his five years. He prefers Grouse hunting over sheds but stills knows what we are looking for in the spring. You can definitely train them to do both.

I wonder if a German shepherd could be trained to hunt sheds?
