trap size?
Plan to order some coil spring footholds for coyote and fox.
Go big or small?
I like the look of MB's...450 or 650?
The 650 has no dog and seems like something that would last a long time if it was not stolen....450 seems well made.
The gear to get started seems to be adding up and maybe I should just get some bridgers for this season.
They seem OK and are less expensive.
But pan size is smaller.....
Not sure which way to go.
It seems like a $6 per trap difference as you go up in quality......bridger 1.75-$9...mb 450-$15...650-$21....bridger #3....$15.
What is the "miss" difference as you go to a quicker and stronger and bigger trap?
The MB650 OL seems like a good trap.....MB650 C seems good also.
$5 more for the cast jaws.
INPUT appreciated.......

Re: trap size?
I'm checking into getting back to a little coyote trapping again. Zap, it looks like that 450 trap is OK for fox and coon but seems small for coyote. Are you trapping in freezing conditions? I think part of trap size is if it will spring out of the ground quick enough if the ground is a little froze. I know coyotes can pound a trap to pieces if it's too small, or doesn't have enough chain.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

Re: trap size?
Not sure if the weather will be bad or not, but there may be snow/cold.
Maybe the mb550 is a good starting point.
2 coil cast jaws for $205 a dozen.
Mb 650 with a positive click step down notched dog and 4 coiled, outside laminate jaws for $235.
Probably need trap setter and it is $10.

Looks like a Cadillac yote trap.

Re: trap size?
I'd go with the 550. I think you will be happy with the MB. Awesome traps.

Re: trap size?
I ran #2 bridgers and they always held and sprung well through the end of January in Pa. I had to base plate, center swivel, and 4 coil. Personally I would buy the 650s if I could afford it and without worry of theft. The bridgers did their job I just felt they required more time to mod than I cared to spend.

Re: trap size?
I also started trapping this winter, no luck yet. I just went with some inexpensive duke #2 coilspring traps. I've been running them for about 2 and a half weeks now, moving my traps occasionally. They have snapped easily every time I set them off when I am going to move them. My issue is less with the trap and more about trying to get a coyote to step in one! Nothing even investigating my sets so far, I'll keep trying.

Are you using bait and lure James?
Here is some good basic info.

Re: trap size?
You guy's might want to check into getting coyote snares. Trying to get them to come into bait and then step in a trap is pretty hard even if the ground isn't frozen. The snares are cheaper and you set them on runways. We use the left over deer bones and setup away from the carcass. Once you get the dominate animals out of the area the others will come easier. If you want to use foot hold traps I would use blind sets away from the bait. Place two stick in the trail and put the trap in between the sticks. When they step over the stick they will step on the trap.

Oh yes, I am very very well researched. I have been trying scent post sets, dirt hole sets, dirty snow sets, visual attractants, lures, baits, you name it. It's been so damn cold and deep snow here in Minnesota, that it's been brutal to even check traps.

Re: trap size?
I am pretty against snares in my area, all I have are populated urban areas with state forests that receive high traffic even in the winter. Not uncommon for me to see a loose house dog running through the woods from a farm half a mile away. I think we had 10-12 reported dead domestic dogs in snares here in MN last year.

Dogs should not be running free on their own.

I agree 100% assuming snares are set outside bird seasons
