Where to start?

Unread postby BowHusker » Sat Oct 29, 2016 12:44 pm

I have been wanting to get into trapping for awhile now but I have no clue where to start. I have zero trapping experience but I figured some of you beast members could point me in the right direction. Do you guys have any books or DVDs you recommend for newbies?

What state do you live in? Do you need or did you take a trapper class? In WI we need to take a class in order to trap.

I live in Nebraska, from all I have read there is no mention of taking a class.

I'm starting this year too. I'm starting with muskrats first because it takes a lot less money to get started. You don't need nearly as many tools to put up the fur. I'll use the money I get to buy more tools next year and get into coons .

I do want to get into beaver and otter as well in the future and also some animal damage control to make some extra cash.

Try your state trapping organization. They're usually very helpful!!!

Great plan Brian. Rats are fun to trap! Quick and easy and we're bringing a nice price a few years ago, I'm not sure these days.

Bowhusker, what are you looking to trap?

Thanks for the replies guys!

I really have an interest in bobcats for some reason and I know my area has a really good population of them. Maybe like Brian said above that starting small with one target species is the way to go. I'm not familiar with muskrats at all but it sounds very interesting and there is a few miles of public river ground very close to me.

Cats are an easier fur bearer to trap. And if you can use snares it can be fairly cheap to get started. I would definitely check out what your state regs are first.

Bobcats are in the CITES program. Check your state regs for any info on them. Trapping them may be limited unlike other animals.
