Windy day Whitetail... HB/TV

Unread postby dan » Tue Jun 24, 2014 4:13 am

Check out our latest show... A windy day Whitetail. This was filmed in 2013 on a small farm I hunt with my friend Dave. As is typical with me, its a crazy show that you have to see to believe. I think you need to watch it on a PC. Enjoy the show and please make a comment in the Extreme Whitetail Tacics forum. 8-)

Do you think it would be better to lower the stand below the v of the tree you hunted in? Bigger trunk, could break you up more.

The hunting gods were smiling on you that day! Congrats on the buck.

Dang it, wrong spot. Can you move it to the extreme whitetail thread?

You truley have a golden horse shoe lodged in your rear end  Can't believe that thing came back. At first I thought it was another buck that walked into frame. Pretty cool.

Great great video. There is much to learn from this video. The first great point is hunting windy days. Most guys wont even go when it gets windy. I think this is because they rely on sound to alert them of approaching deer. IN my opinion under most circumstances if you hear a buck coming before you see it you are not hunting good enough.

One thing I would like to mention, if you are hunting cold windy days wear some rain gear under your outer layer or wind breaker clothes. You can't bulk up with extra clothing it will effect your shooting. It has cost me more than one good buck over the years to learn this lesson.

The next point this video demonstrates is you don't always get a great blood trail. This is especially true in early season when the bucks are carrying a lot of fat. I have seen fat plug a hole and no blood on perfect shots more than once. The next thing I think the video demonstrates, get help to look. A buddy can be a moral booster and actually help you look harder/longer when you are bummed out.

This video is a super learning tool and not just because it was a successful hunt caught on film. Kudos to Dan again, for sharing a boat load of knowledge and experience with all of us.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

That is a great tip Stan...

Good point... I was pretty burnt out by the time we found that buck. Having someone to help can be as much a mental advantage as it is a search advantage... I just kept telling myself, that was a great hit, thats a dead deer.

It can/is miserable hunting on windy days. But I have knocked down some good bucks on real windy days, when most guys just won't go out. I love how you commented the wind was beating you up. That is when I think it starts to get good. I do believe you need to be as close to buck bedding as possible to get optimum results.

Another awesome video Dan  , lots to learn in that one.
How are you liking that Enigma Camo? That could be what allowed you to get that second arrow in the naked tree
I love mine, Chuck makes some quality stuff and the pattern breaks up the human outline so well :D

Nicely Done

Great hunt Dan, windy days are some of my favorite to hunt depending on time of year. I seem to be able to handle the wind a lot better during the rut than I can late season. I can sit all day in 20-30 mph winds in early November when it's 35-40 degrees out. Yet have trouble sitting 2 hours in 15 mph winds @ 25 degrees in late season. Most of that is mindset, I never want to leave a good spot during the rut. Where as late season I really have to push myself to go out, regardless the weather.

I remember hunting at camp ripley one year and it was so windy I had to hold on with both hands on the bottom of my seat.Watching that video reminded me of that
