Re: Deer Pricing
I think one thing that can get lost in translation in threads like these is cost of living where the taxi lives and works. Things will always cost more where cost of living is higher. If two guys are mounting the same amount of deer but one's location dictates his rent or mortgage is twice as high... Obviously he must charge more to cover his higher overhead.
Where I live $400 is fair. One of my best friends is a full time taxi. $400 is what he charges and he makes a nice living. $400 wouldn't go near as far by Chicago or where ever else that has a higher cost of living.
You are saying you have your hands on the hide more than 8 hours start to finish? <--- Assuming your are not repairing neck shots etc.

Re: Deer Pricing
There is way more than 8 hours invested in a whitetail mount from start to completion.
cape it
turn everything
salt it
pickle/tan it
thin it on the fleshing machine
remove the cartilage from the ears
thin the eyes, lips, nostrils
sew up holes hole shots, skinning
modify the ear liners
modify the form so it fits/test fits
clay up the ear butts
set the eyes
glue up the form
taxi hide around on form to fit
sew up the back
nail the back or tuck if done in leather
adjust the ears
tuck the eyes, lips, nose
then baby sit it for the next 3 days when majority or drying takes place
epoxy sculpt the eyes
texture the nose
paint ears eyes nose
add wet look to eyes
DONE
I have my hands on it more than 8hrs total. Skin shrinks and it needs to be taxied as it dries and glue sets.
Big Hunt came to the shop and watched me put a buck together. Saw it first hand. More than 8, easily. I can do one in 8, and it would involve skipping a lot of steps.

Re: Deer Pricing
were $495 for a whitetail shoulder mount.
I think we put more time into the details than others. Best thing to do is look at peoples work. it speaks for itself. if your ever in the area stop by the shop and see some of the bucks we have mounted for Dan.

$500 is definitely fair as long as one gets what they are paying for. I am sure you deliver a great product as well.
It amazes me at the deer and turkey expos how terrible some of the mounts are. One of my hunting buddies goes to a guy who charges $250 with a three week turn around. The mounts look like roadkill. He shot a public land 160" last fall and I tried to talk him into having a quality mount done but went to his guy anyhow.

Re: Deer Pricing
I agree, there are a lot of bad mounts out there. I don't think a majority of the people look at quality, they look at the racks and price.

Buckeye describes the exact reason why I thought I would never want amount. Most of the ones I see hanging and sports shops look like crap. When I saw how nice they could be it changed my mind completely. If I ever get a good , he's going on my wall full shoulder mount and I'll be happy to pay $600. Considering the last 20+ years, you're only looking at $30 a year or so in terms of yearly investment, or about three bucks a month. Heck, I'm having a Brooktrout mounted and it's going to cost me 700+. If the work is superior, you're paying for the art or the artist at that point. Some work is worth more than others. You're not buying a T-shirt at Walmart.

Re: Deer Pricing
I am just starting out in hunting and in life so it's hard for me to justify the 500 for my hobby on top of the expense of gas, tags and equipment. I will mount a mature deer if I harvest but man that's a good amount of coin. Might start processing friends deer to pay for my mount ha

Re: Deer Pricing
I pay $460 in Michigan for mine. Eaves Taxidermy. He has done everyone of my deer and will continue to do so. Great shop and service. Anyone from Michigan interested just take a look at my pics and see the work he's done.
