Cleaning antlers? Chemicals?

Unread postby HoosierG5 » Tue Dec 06, 2016 3:07 pm

I found a good buck skull this year while hunting from last year. I tried to put some stain on the rack to darken it and I screwed it up. It ran. Its too shiny. Etc...what can I put on it to take it away without weakening or ruining the rack?

I think your best bet would be professional grade peroxide from a beauty supply store (40 volume). Just paint the peroxide on with a brush and then heat it with a heat gun to activate the effects of peroxide. You won't have any pitting or decalcification of the antler with peroxide. You can then try staining with a different color.

Brown shoe polish is the way to darken something. It is easy to control the darkness. I have to wonder why you wanted to change the natural color of antlers you found in the woods. To remove the stain, use paint thinner and a rag.

Light application of black walnut stain on a rag. Put on to your liking. Do not whiten the horns. Acetone or paint thinner is worth trying to remove.
