My feeble attempts of taxidermy

Unread postby oldrank » Wed Nov 29, 2017 11:41 am

I mounted my 2017 buck. This was my 2nd attempt at taxidermy. I am pretty happy with how he turned out. I still made alot of mistakes but learned alot. Doing the final adjustments n painting.

I also did a European mount on my 2017 eight point.

I also tanned my 12 points hide. If any one remembers my thread on the processor ruining my cape, I felt I owed it to this buck to keep the hide. I used a vinegar, salt n water pickle then ordered tanning formula online. It came out really good. No hair slippage at at. I'm just finishing up breaking it.

They were all fun projects. My wife thinks I'm a little crazy..lol, maybe I am. I do wanna thank Jeff G. for giving me a few tips.

Looks good man!! I’d be happy with it too.

How much do you have invested when mounting one on your own? Form, hide tanning, everything said and done.

I’ve been thinking about doing my mulies.

I had to buy a new cape. That cost me 150. Because my processor didn't charge me for jacking up my cape I saved 90 on processing fees. So I'm out 60 for cape. My kit was 115. It was not a really good kit. I wouldn't buy another one. I had to pick up needles to sew. I bought clay. That was another 12 bucks. Got some mod podge for his nose, 4 bucks.... I'm in it a couple hundred.

I could have probably done it for 150 or so if I didn't have to buy a cape.

My cape came pretanned. That was really nice to not deal with.

One other thing though Lockdown. It's very labor intensive. I give major respect to anyone doing it for a living. I have over 20 hours of solid work into him. I'm sure a pro is much more efficient.

That's what happens when I tag out... To much free time, haha.

I also took all my smaller racks I had in a pile in the basement and mounted up on a board I aged outside n hung in my trophy room.

Looking good. I've always wanted to try. But, that's all I need is one more iron in fire.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

I wouldn’t call that a feeble attempt. Looks pretty darn good to me. I have seen some that guys payed almost $500 and waited a year for a mount that didn’t look even close to how yours looks. Good job oldrank. 8-)

Very impressive. How much work goes into the hide tanning?
