Re: Fixing antler debate
I don't think I would fix them personally. I found a broken off piece of antler scouting once. I still have it somewhere in a pile of sheds. Might even still have the picture I took. I'll have to check.

I wouldn’t fix him. I’m with boogie it adds to the character and story.
Dad fixed one of his SD bucks brows that were both broke. Whatever, not a big deal, but I think about it every time I look at it.

Ok, I remember the Rompala buck, but what did he claim it scored? Also he signed a agreement with Milo?

I believe it was claimed to have netted around 216 typical.
The only way I could see fixing a bucks rack I shot is if it was named after a rack characteristic and that specific characteristic was broken off, but even then I'd doubt it.

I wouldn't have them "fixed" but then I don't think I would ever get a rack mounted with a different cape either. I want to see the buck I shot, just like I shot him.
Not that I have a problem with other guys doing either of these things. To each his own. Now, if you get a cape and mount up a set of sheds, I still won't say anything, but I'll be laughing my but off internally!

Re: Fixing antler debate
As long as it’s not in contention for a record I don’t really care if anyone fixes antlers. Would be pretty sad if someone replaced a broken main beam though IMO. Getting a mount done costs enough alone without getting bone repaired. My 2014 buck broke off close to 20” of antler from the end of October to the day I shot him, according to trail cam pics. He broke a tine that was 7-8” in the six days before I killed him. He was good enough to shoot with them broke, he is good enough mounted with them broke.
Teaching is only demonstrating that it is possible.... Learning is making it possible for yourself.

Re: Fixing antler debate
We had a buck a while back I thought would score around 210. A guy down the road shot it, but while he was spraying lead he blew off a couple tines. The buck scored 196 with the shot off tines, the guy dug thru the cattails and found the broken pieces and fixed it... It would of scored about 217 based on the fix. I guess in that case I might think about fixing it.
But as far as naturally broken? I had a giant buck I was hunting right till the end of the season and finally had him cornered in mid December with his unique track going into bedding in the snow and not coming out. I set up and finally got the opportunity to shoot that buck. But when he came by something was missing, he had shed his antlers. Should I have shot him and just "made a set" ?
I could care less what others do, I know guys who mount road kills. Whatever... You should tell your friend he should just worry about himself, and you just keep being you and don't worry about what others think.
