September 28th 2010

I was setup, thinking about how uncomfortable of a tree I was setup in was, but it was the right tree... the only tree, it was in the right spot so I had to make due. Then at 6:30 I see a deer through the thick foliage coming from the nasty clear cut regrowth that I had watched this bachelor group use over the summer. First a familiar little buck from summer glassing... But where were the other two he had been with all summer. I thought maybe the group had split. Then a few minutes later I saw two more coming through the thicket, the other little guy from the group emerged with my target buck lagging behind them.

The young bucks were care free goofing off bounding around. The bigger buck bounced off about off 35 yards to my right, seemed to distance himself from the two little guys playing around. He stood there a moment and then walked right back at me and was about perfect broadside at 6 yards. He then looked up and locks his eyes on me. He put his head down, then picked it back up looking at me again, I am already at full draw. Again he does the head bob.

He then took three bounds away from me and stops looking away from me, I release the arrow. I hear the loudest thwack I have ever heard from an arrow impact. He runs off, I can follow his general path for about 75 yards.

I call my buddy, he is on his way. I gather all of my stuff and carry it out to the field edge and wait on him. He gets there 45 minutes later and I retrace the events for him.

We cannot find the arrow or blood at the impact site. 10 yards later we do find blood and follow it for maybe 150 yards. We backed out for the night.

The next morning we arrived back to follow the blood trail around 8AM. It was an easy blood trail to follow for the most part. Evidence showed us it was a high one lung hit. The blood was red in some spots pink with bubbles in it in others.

We ended up following the trail all morning, we then jumped the buck from his bed, this was 16 hours after the shot. We found a couple small drops of blood in his bed, and no blood at all along his escape trail. The soil was wet and soft so we were able to follow his tracks for a while before we lost them. We then did semi circles one larger than the last trying to find him but we never did that day.

Here is a trail cam photo of the buck.

The tail end of March while shed hunting this property I came across his carcass. As I found him. While on the blood trail I recorded the track on MyTracks. Referencing back to it, we were within 200 feet of where I found him at one point.
