On both hunts, I had each bird fly off the roost and come into attack my decoys. Textbook hunts more or less and I owe scouting for my success with both hunts.
I shot both in the head in the 6-10 yard range.
It was definitely a lucky season getting two to come in that close.
Thanks for the kind words guys!
That's wicked. Were you using a head shot specific broadhead like a bullhead or a gullotine? Or just a regular broadhead?
Were you in a blind? Or just set up with natural cover?
Sorry for all the questions.
No problem man. Glad you asked.
I was using a blind with both hunts. A challenge in itself with a 64" bow!!
I shot both with the Magnus bullhead 125 grain. I used to shoot them off my compound a few years ago and liked them but they can be tedious tuning with a compound. I decide on a whim after opening day I'd try them off the recurve and see how they tuned since i already use a long arrow off the curve. I practiced a bunch in my backyard out to 15 yards shooting a hanging pillow. They flew like lazers and so much simpler than shooting off a compound and having to buy different arrows etc.
The trick with the bullheads off a 43 pound bow is you must aim for the actual head and not the neck. The neck is doable with a compound but iffy with a recurve. In addition, they must be RAZOR sharp. I sharpened the heck out of my blades and they demolished both birds. If you take a close look at both pics you can see some of the carnage!
The head seems like a small target but I feel body shots on birds with a bow is a tricky proposition. I've seen too many lost over the years with otherwise good shots.
