Whitetailassasin's 1st Archery buck 2017
As many who have followed know, I have been doing a heck of a lot more setting others up than myself, but it's paid dividends two fold this year. One I'm getting some people their biggest bucks to date, and two I'm gaining some serious eyes and intel on movements, and bucks seen in areas I can't hunt all at the same time. Well one of those such areas my brother hunted and I told him and my dad how to get back there and how to hunt this area. On the way back in he calls me and said he's watching a booner bedded at 90 yards with two other bucks that go CBM; commemorative bucks of Michigan (100"). We talked for an hour in whisper as I tried to calm him and tell him to be patient and watch where they go. Twice the big guy got up and got to within 75 yards of him, constantly rebedding, but the other two didn't. Finally at about 1hr before he got up and went away from him and scraped and racked a tree good my brother said. Said it was very aggressive. Well the next evening we made plans to go after him. It's a buck I know all too well, and I was confident he or either of the other two bucks, would be in this area again. I set up with a NE wind blowing SW suspected(known ) bedding to my NE. My daughter and I snuck into a row of trees between the bedding and food/travel route. About 6:30 the wind died down and I told Lex I was going to grunt a couple times and to watch bedding. 3-4 grunts and we waited. Within 10 mins I heard the unmistakeable sounds of water splashing and a deer coming. I told lex listen how that walking isn't splash splash splash, it's kasplosh thunk, kasplosh thunk; I told her that's a buck, and he isn't happy. Within seconds I could see the marsh grass swaying. I told lex get the camera on and ready, as he emerged from the swamp. He was looking left and right and licking his nose. He smelled the ground for a few moments then went over to a shrub and thrashed it and demolished it to pieces. He broke half of it off and it was stuck in his rack and he flung it aside and then stood there dominantly like yeah I'm Barney and whose next. The whole time Lex is recording all of this!! He then started to come right to the tree and turned broadside at 23 yards. I tried stoping him in the camera window, but he took two more steps as I had to meh a little louder. I was at full draw so as soon as he stopped, my pin settled right where I was aiming. Deaths face was camo and his wicked smile became a piercing look of concentration as the bow of souls claimed another, as his arrow flew true and his lighted nock hit its mark. The buck let out a oof and tore off back toward bedding. I heard him crash and kick about 50-60 yards out. I turned to lex who was shaking and she was whispering that was awesome! Dad you stroked him. Was a very good moment to share with her. We waited till dark and followed the trail to the deer. Took some hero shots and told my dad and brother the story as we both beamed with pride. I've rough scored him and he will go 100-105" prob CBM, and my brother said he's one of the deer he seen with the big boy. Getting him aged as I'm not sure how old, his nose is long, and his body was big, but I'd like to know for sure before I throw out an age.
