Net Guy's Dream for 3
Hi Everyone
Many of you know I am on a mission for 3 WI bucks this year. The first came on Sept 27th - Son Jonathan. Got #2 on WI gun opener. Our group hunts up in Northern WI on roughly 9K of paper land. This is only our 2nd year on this land, and we've had fairly decent luck. I've already taken 2 bucks off this land and should have had 2 more. Well, this gun season started off pretty well.
For one, the weather for this opener was 100 times better than last year. That was miserable. With fairly warm temps, we actually experienced some foggy conditions. My dad and I are both set up on this point that jets out into a massive tag alder swamp. To the NW is a field that separates us and my father-in-law. Of course, my father-in-law only has 1/4 mile walk from the road, and we have a 2-mile walk. The way the crow flies though, we're probably only 1/2 apart or so.
The morning started off very quiet. Leaves were wet so you couldn't hear much. Then all broke lose. At roughly 8:45 my father-in-law shot. Just once, followed by radio silence. Then he sounded off on the radio that he shot at a buck. This is big for him because he hasn't shot a buck in nearly 10 years. However, when he said the buck kept walking after he shot I wasn't too excited. My next hope was that the buck would take a trail to my stand.
15 mins passed and nothing. I kept watching behind me (towards my father-in-law) but nothing. So, what does a guy do then? Eat a sandwich of course! I sit down and enjoy my wonderful processed meat sandwich. Didn't take long, but once finished, I heard a "CRACK." I thought Oh no, Not again! Just two weeks prior a nice buck busted me because I wasn't paying attention as I should have.
This time I slowly stood up to look behind me. With the gun resting on my shooting rest, I was confident I could quickly grab it if need be. Then another "CRACK" I look down only 30 yards away, and sure enough there he is! I reached behind me, grabbed the gun, aimed, then SHOT! Took an off-hand shot, but at only 30 yards, he was dead to rights. He went only 2 feet (straight down) Definitely not my biggest, but a decent buck in Northern WI. Probably weighed in that 160-165lbs range! Remember that 2 miles walk in? Drag wasn't too bad actually. Threw him in a sled and with 4 guys we hauled him out with relative ease.
Now the dream for 3 is still alive. Now I just need to fix my bow after it blew up my last trip out and get #3!

Congrats man. The hat trick always feels good.
No Shortcuts. No Excuses. No Regrets.
Everybody's selling dreams. I'm too cheap to buy one.
