My 2017 Season
Ive neglected to post bucks the past couple years so here goes. I killed both of these MI bucks on holidays this year. One was on on Halloween evening and the other Thanksgiving morning. Ive been so busy with work and family, that I really had to pick my days this year.
The first buck was my target buck for the year, Im confident he is a 3.5 yr old. Luck wasnt on my side early season, so I backed off.Long story short, I used the info I have on him, beds, weather and did the best I could. He came by a half hour before dark, doing something I saw him doing a few days prior. My first Halloween buck and the biggest buck I had on camera all fall in this area. He dressed out at 180. It was a great feeling again to shoot the one target buck I had.
Now I killed the only shooter I had on cam, and I passed up many bucks during November, which were some really good 2 yr olds. I was passing bucks that could possibly be the biggest left, so it was tough. The surrounding pressure is very high. However, a week after killing the 8pt, a new buck decided to pass through and stick around. He was big. For 3 weeks I tried to hunt as smart as I could and stay in the game. I noticed he had a couple things he did repeatedly, so I used those to my advantage, and hope he stayed alive on neighboring properties. I shot him Thanksgiving morning. It was a quick shot, only about 5-6 seconds after seeing him, walking at about 65-70 yards, it was a now or never type of deal due to thick area. I believe this buck only came here and stuck around since I killed the first 8pt, since the first buck was very aggressive. This 10pt body was actually smaller in body size. I didn't get him weighed but I doubt he was over 165-170 dressed.
I'm very happy with these 2 bucks for this area. By today, the only 2 yr olds remaining have been killed or have wounds visible. I decided the past couple years to only target the absolute top bucks around, and its paying off.
