Went Bobcat hunting yesterday
See, I still hunt. We had about 6-8" of snow down here Monday and thought Tuesday would be a good time to go up looking for cat tracks. There was only an inch or two of snow up there.
I went a couple hours north (no bobcat hunting around me in SE Michigan) running some dirt roads trying to cut a cat track in the fresh snow. Found tons of coyote tracks. Sidenote: the deer I numbers that I saw were incredible (probably less than 100 but more than 50). This area used to not have doe hunting, any Michiganders feel free to PM, I will tell you exactly where I was. It just isn't an area that I ever deer hunted and when I go up I spend time in other places.
Anyway I did not get a bobcat. This came in on my last set and I killed it. I stood up out of my blown over tree and was ready to go pick up the caller, and this catches my eye. Fairly close to my surprise about 45- 50 yards. That single shot turkey gun of mine with 3 1/2 inch #4 buck really hammers on my end. Oh, it did OK on the coyote, but has me wondering on longer distance or tougher coyote. I was not super impressed for the wallop I took.
Such nice fur that is why I post a few pics, and I haven't been in the kill zone in a while.
I shot it from this blow over, I was kinda kneeling behind it and stood up as it approached. Luckily I am usually pretty quick on the trigger, I have been in these situations before and they usually dont take long to spook, but I dropped the hammer on it before it caught me.

Re: Went Bobcat hunting yesterday
nice Lou! Anyone know exactly how much damage a bobcat poses to a deer herd? I shot one 2 years ago cause I wanted one mounted, but I don't think I would shoot another if it's not putting a hurt on the fawn crop like coyotes. I just like to watch bobcats, true stalkers of the forest.

Re: Went Bobcat hunting yesterday
Thanks all for the words.
I don't know personally, but I do know they have a season, and I try to participate. The North American game management model essentially guarantees long term survival of any species that they put a season on. And I could't agree more they are a cool animal and would love to be able to watch them more, they just never show up when I am around.
