Congrats Neil! Awesome buck!!
How did you know where he was bedding after the flooding? Observation?
Love the creative story telling. May I request a poem for your next kill?

While walking into the stand I kicked a doe out of a CRP field, which made me think that she was bedding there either because no one had hunted the area yet (possible but unlikely) OR due to the flooding it had pushed the deer out of the cattail bedding onto the edge of the woods/brush. I slowly eased along the edge of the woods looking for sign, I found no rubs, but could have easily missed them, it was tall brush, young willows and grass. As I got closer to the end of the wood lot I could see a couple of trails (not beat down) but still trails coming out of a bedding area I had marked in late winter. I had picked some trees out last winter, but they were basically setup for rut hunts, right on the edge of the cattails and right where I thought any bucks would be bedding currently. I took my time picking my tree, thinking things over in my head etc. I ended up setup 40 yards from the edge of the thick stuff they came out of. Without the flooding I would have setup probably 30 to 40 yards closer. Basically I made an educated guess and got lucky
I hope I'm getting better at picking trees for bed hunts. Of interest (to me at least ) of my 11 hunts so far, I've seen 5 does and 5 bucks. I could have killed 3 of the does and ALL of the bucks. Buck age range: 2- 1.5 yo.; 2-2.5 yo; 1- 2.5/3.5 yo.

Re: How I got kilt (the buck's perspective)
I weighed my buck, and I'm kicking myself for buying a digital scale. If you don't pull the buck up quickly or you pause the scale takes the measurement . After dinking around with hoisting up, and letting back down multiple times I eventually got this weight ( buck's head was still partially on the ground when weighed )

I was thinking 190 lbs and looks like I was pretty darn close. That’s the same exact scale I have.
