Long 4 years.

Unread postby Outdoor814 » Tue Dec 01, 2020 3:25 pm

The last few years have been full of highs and lows. I watched a many buck pass my stand, and even sailed a few arrows that didn't meet their mark, but I finally filled a buck tag after a 4 season's of tag soup.
Saturday November 28th was Pennsylvania's rifle season opener. I spent the morning trying to avoid the onslaught of hunters hoping to fill a tag. After driving around checking spots that were ghost towns during archery season, my buddy and I finally found a piece of public that was void of any vehicles. Neither of us had ever been on this parcel of gameland before so we were going in with no knowledge of the area accept what we saw on maps. We basically walked it like we were performing grid searches in hope of bumping a buck to one another. I had seen 1 heavy horned buck running through the woods that offered no decent shot. I'm not sure how many points, but he was definitely a shooter.
We regrouped and left the woods for a quick lunch. Around 1 AM we went back to the same area and once again had it to ourselves. We decided to each find a spot to sit for the rest of the evening. I chose and area where some hardwoods met a hemlock swamp and sat a little off the transition. I hadn't been sitting for 5 minutes when I could hear crashing off to my left. 5 doe were bolting straight for me. They passed in front of me at no less than 10 yards. Seconds later 4 more doe and a spike came running on the same path. Right behind them I heard a grunt and a decent buck coming down the same path. I fired a shot that wad a clean miss, then once he passed me I connected on a second shot. He crossed a creek and died maybe 80 yards away.
It was like a heavy weight was lifted off my shoulders, I'm extremely greatful for this buck. I've spent the last 4 years focusing on harvesting a mature buck, and came so close several times, including this year. Once the archery season ended I had made the decision that I need to not focus so much on shooting the biggest buck in the woods, but to have fun. Remember that the trophy isn't the antlers, but the memories and meals you get to share with friends and family.

Awesome! Congrats! Did your buddy bump them out, or were they all running from the buck?
