Well known Hunting Beast member Todd Havel also known as Magicman54494 takes us into his world of tracking Whitetails.

In this podcast Todd shares his tips, tactics, and experiences while hunting Whitetails on foot in the Big Woods of Northern Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

Todd talks at length about:

- The proper gear you need
- The learning curve on tracking
- How to pick a track
- Tracking - pace, noise, wind, and observations
- What tracking has taught him about bedding
- What tracking has taught him about mature buck behavior

During all this Todd shares some great memories he's made tracking and killing mature Whitetails

What I learned:

- There is no substitute for learning in the field, if you want to study tracks, you need to get boots on the ground
- Mature deer move with a purpose, and often follow a pattern based on topography and learned instincts
- Pack light, but be prepared for the unexpected
- Think outside the box, hunt like a predator, mimic deer movement and behavior, and embrace change
- Track characteristics and how tracks age
- What a track can tell you about an animal, age, gate, and time of movement

It was a pleasure talking with Magicman, I think we probably could have made a 5 hour podcast :D , big thanks again for taking the time to do this!

Well deserved and excellent listen. Congrats and great interview Magicman! Thank you Mario for all you do!

Im writing this while I listen:
I liked how you spoke about starting out bc my grandpa taught me to meat hunt as well but instead of taking decades to grow iv learned alot from Dan and you guys. You really opened my mind about bucks waiting an hour or more to come into calls. I am very much a novice at calling but I know im getting better bc of results. Excellent tip about the but of the gun catching on clothing, I think weve all been there... The NickWax trick is one for the , great tip!! Sounds like you need to stealth strips your boots. I like what you stated about exp and tracking... a guy cannot fake being a a good tracker.

  Following a doe that is hilarious story! Thats a new saying to remember while tracking "Watch for the Squat!" Alright... new test in the works... how fast does buck scat freeze? Oh here we go... the Magicman Challenge - how fresh is your buck pee? Gotta love that smell in the morning! Expect a funny pic from me this winter! :D I really like what you said about sports players and slowing the game down, that is definitely something iv struggled with.... but im naturally wound up so that one will be tough to over come...

Everyone remember to Sqeeze the Poop

Great interview Todd thank you for being willing and taking the time!

Great Great podcast Magicman! I really appreciate you guys (including Mario) taking time out of your busy lives, to help guys like me become better hunters! You will never realize the value these podcasts bring to a 52 year old rookie beast!

Tracking has always been a "dark art" until I found the Beast. I never used to look twice at a deer track. Now, I assume my brother in law thinks I'm a nutjob, on my hands and knees in the mud looking at deer tracks while we're out scouting. He just sees a trail and never even looks at the tracks.

You've inspired me! I hope we have snow for deer season. Because, I'm going to spend my entire gun season just tracking deer! Not even sit in a stand.

Also plenty of other deer behavior information that I will store in the memory banks!

I have been getting into tracking during the gun season the last 3 years so I have really been looking forward to this podcast. I'm about 1/2 way through it so far and as expected it's really great. So many little tidbits that I picked up already. Buck tracks changing as he gets tired and then changing again after he rests in his bed is something I never thought about. I have also tracked a doe thinking it was a buck but she never squatted to pee.

Great job Magic. Looking forward to listening to this one MANY times.
