Impressive to say the least! In my mind, you have defined what a great hunter really is. You have accomplished things that probably 99% of people who consider themselves hunters will never accomplish. This is a prime example of why I love this website.

Re: The Palmetto Kid
Thanks so much for all the kind words, I am glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks. I would agree, of all the bucks I have killed in FL, I don't remember any of them being 'easy', that is for sure.
As far as the maps, nowadays it is all about bedding. Not that I would pass on a big buck in other situations but I really want to catch them in their bedroom, where they have every advantage. So I sort through lots of public land until I find one with good predictable bedding habitat. Next, I pin down specific beds or bedding areas and then choose the best way to go about hunting them. Sometimes I combine the different tactics I talked about. I will setup on certain beds for morning/evening hunts if they seem predictable. If there is bedding that seems more ambiguous I will still-hunt through it midday. In just a few days I can go through the majority or all of the best bedding in a pretty big chunk of land and stack it as I go, this keeps anticipation high to the very last day. Not to mention I have all that intel and inventory now for the following season.
However, the majority of the bucks I have killed from strictly cyber scouting were during rut. Mainly what I look for is an area with everything a buck wants and lacks the one thing it hates, hunting pressure. Whether it is a long walk, lack of huntable trees, thick nasty areas, proximity to road or structure, water barrier blocking access, etc… I would look for a decent sized area with good habitat that should have little or no pressure and then figure out the best funnel or destination within that area. Basically i am trying to pinpoint the best spots within the best areas. It isn't an exact science and you have to be mentally prepared that sometimes things won't work out or be what you expected and a morning or evening hunt might be blown. For every heroic kill story, I have at least one spectacular blunder where a plan or spot did not pan out. One funny story was in a 'prairie' type area, I was going to hunt the only tree within about a square mile section, when I got to the tree in the dark it was smoking, it had been struck by lightning the day before… So you literally have to be ready for anything...

Re: The Palmetto Kid
I have to say i have major respect for you PK.
I think out of all the different places to hunt in the U.S, those nasty swamps in the south would be for sure the toughest to hunt as far as terrain, weather, and creepy crawlies.
That was a great post. I bet half of the guys on here wouldn't last in those swamps including myself! Keep up the awesomeness.
I do have a question for you though...have you ever thought about coming to the midwest to hunt? I think you could wreak havoc up here...

Re: The Palmetto Kid
Great bucks man, I can relate to your situation and you have done great in that environment.
Those hidden funnels are an interesting concept, most of the bucks I've killed during the rut were in that scenario even though I didn't fully understand it.
Great read, well done
