Re: Do you carry a pistol while bow hunting?
Alright, so far I have posted that Michigan hunters have been shot in their treestand and left dead- hanging from their harness.
I also posted about the hunters that were fed to the hogs here in Michigan... really there's more.
Do I need to carry when I bowhunt? Let's take a look at what happened just down the road from my house this bow season, shall we? This was in my home township, in my home county... just down the road from me. On October 12th, four bowhunters on a couple of quads were travelling toward their stands and the parking area for their quads. Two men stepped out and cut them off. One of them announced he was a conservation officer and that he wanted to see their hunting licenses and their quadrunner orv stickers... The bowhunters stated that they did not believe him, as he was far from "clean cut," if you get my drift. The man pulled out a .45 semi-auto and fired a round into the dirt next to their quadrunners. Fortunately he did not kill anyone. He was arraigned earlier today in the courthouse of the county in which I live.

I rarely use my holster. I usually have it in an empty pocket.
I carry a s&w shield 40 in a custom Wright leather works owb holster at all times when afield. When in public I carry iwb in another makers custom leather holster with a tuckable belt clip. The owb holster is literally the most comfortable carry I've ever experienced even with my hss harness on and using/packing in my summit climber.

I don't like leg holsters cause I want to be able to get my gun un-noticed if there is a confrontation. When confronted by an angry human my hand is already on my gun unseen by the person, loaded, cocked, and safety off.

Unholstered pocket carry in deemed very unsafe by 99.99999999% of firearms instructors. Just saying.
As far as a leg rig the best way to use one is with the bottom strap fastened around the leg just below the crotch. Ditch the top strap and do not use it like they do in the 'movies'.
I use a leg rig sometimes and chafing is never a problem. I like it because it keeps my pistol clear of my harness and outerwear.
But sometimes I just use my otw kydex.
Condor has an inexpensive and pretty good leg rig. Just take the top strap off. It will also adjust for almost any pistol and will accommodate a pistol with a weapon light.
The downside of a leg rig is the weapon is usually visible. I usually have a dump pouch over mine and that covers it up to a good degree but leaves it easily accessible.

DARKER THAN NIGHT
ON A COLD, SNOWY NIGHT IN 1985, TWO MEN BEGGED FOR THEIR LIVES.
In 1985, two 27-year-old friends left their suburban Detroit homes for a hunting trip in rural Michigan. When they did not return, their families and police suspected foul play. For 18 years, no one could prove a thing. Then, a relentless investigator got a witness to talk, and a horrifying story emerged.
Just ordered the book.

I won't spoil it for you exo!
Just finished it. I am not a big book reader and really did not like the way it was written but man the cops did a great job on that one. 18 years and they finally got the guys and sent to their deaths (since no possibility of parole).
Also, I guess the South is not the only place for backwards folks. I wanted to use some spicy sentence enhancers as SpongeBob would call them but do not feel like getting trouble.
I wonder if all of those Duvall's are still up their with all the cousins. Does not sound like nice place to go.

I don't need to carry, I'm a ninja.Southern Man wrote:

Bigfoot doesn't exist, meth heads do.
He has no idea what it's like at the epicenter...especially back 20-25 year's ago. You couldn't go in the woods anywhere without finding a meth lab.
Been a ton people go hunting, never to be seen again. That was a regular occurrence in the day's of the "cornbread mafia". You'd be amazed what men will do when they're facing 20+ year's in the pin and/or losing a 10-15 million dollar crop.

It isn't as bad a place as one would think, and yes the relatives remain. Much of the Mio and South Branch areas are National Forest. The people that live their typically do not have a lot of money. There are some centuries-old family names in the area that everyone knows and they stay out of each others business. Even with all the others that live there, it is fair to say that there are "locals" and "outsiders."
Let me know if you have any more questions about the homes / bar / towns, I am very familiar with them all.

I'm usually IWB at 4. The but of the carry sometimes barely touches the stand at this position, but the clothing isn't restrictive at this point. Only issue is wear on camo/undergarments with the tree stand on my back. Merino wool ain't exactly a tough garment.

Our laws allow us to carry for protection while bowhunting in Alabama. I carry while hunting and hope to never have to use it, but I will if ever needed.

Some states don't allow it. Iowa is one of them. This needs to change.
