I start to 'slow down' before I ever leave the house. Have my gear already to go,so I'm not getting worked up about getting a late start. Leave the house plenty early. Take my time driving to my spot. I may even park a little farther from where I'm going in so I can slow down some more and look for tracks as I walk along the way. I scout my way to my stand, that is, I'm watching for sign as I go. In other words, I make a mental effort to become more in tune with everything around me from the moment I leave my vehicle. Put myself in predator mode. I focus intently once on stand and only move slowly when I hear anything. If I find that I can't focus to that level, usually because I don't have enough confidence in the spot, I'll usually climb down and scout my way to a spot that looks more promising.
