Bad card pull. Would anyone not report this?

Unread postby Whitetailaddict » Sat Sep 23, 2017 3:08 am

So my brother had been hunting some public land in WI and has found a few good bucks on trail cam. The area allows hunting by Native Americans with rifles anytime but they must notify the dnr of their intentions. My brother went in this morning to hunt and pulled the card on the way in to find a guy dragging out one of the nicer bucks he had on camera well into the night with a rifle slung over his shoulder in everyday clothing. I doubt he knew the camera was there and the pic doesn't have the guys face. Would anyone not report this as it may be a poacher. Hopefully my brother can still get on one of the other ones he has.

I've heard some horror stories of Native Americans just wiping out animals and using any means necessary.

It's hard to tell because he could have shot it during daylight with dnr permission but tracked into the night.

My bet is its a poacher... I would just forward the pic to the local warden and move on... Can you post the pic?

Are you sure it wasn't a crossbow? At the right angle they look like a rifle.

The pic i got from him was very blurry so I'd have to get the one off his computer but he definitely said it's a rifle. The area is known to have some natives driving around hunting it. He spoke with some landowners up there and the one told him they also shot a wide 130-140 class ten with short brows he had on cam as well as watched them wound a 170 class 14pt he also had pics of. They claimed they never got that one and that was two weeks ago (before season for everyone else) and that's right when my brother stopped getting pics so i fear the shot was fatal and a monarch like that is rotting in the woods. He called the warden and sent him the pic and he said there's not much he can do although he says he has heard of some illegal activity. In this area the natives can hunt starting Sept 1 with rifles and it can be at night with a spotlight and even on private land if the warden is aware of the whereabouts. They also essentially have unlimited tags. Doesn't matter much to me (since i don't hunt there much anymore) but i feel bad for my brother who works hard but is dealing with legalized poaching. I have no problem with them hunting but it should be by the same laws as everyone else. This is an issue i wish wisconsin would look into but i think it's too sensitive for some in Madison and most hunters turn a blind eye because it doesn't affect them. He still has a few nice ones left if those haven't been gunned down as well. Sorry for the rant i just know it's hard in that area already with out this added pressure.

I've had bad experiences with natives spearing walleyes. It sucks, but nothing you can do about it really. All I can do is not support their businesses and casinos, and move on to different hunting and fishing areas

I should have also added that my brother has a friend that lives in the area who's watched them shoot deer at night with a spotlight just like their ancestors did of course.

I hear you but I'd like to think if enough sportsman got together they could get some changes but maybe that's too optimistic. I'd like to think it's fair they can have any rules they want on the reservations but should have to abide by the laws everyone else does outside those borders. I don't think that's too much to ask but again I'd probably be wrong.

I totally agree with that. But the sportsmans group doesn't have the money to compete with the natives. If we did, I bet we could get somewhere. After all money can buy you just about anything in politics. Just need more than the other guy
