WRT Shockey.

Notwithstanding his commercial of the arrow gun that if i remember this well - it was not an episode of one of his shows - just a commercial project. Call that selling out if you want but it is not characteristic of his usual hunts. It doesn’t make him look good to shoot a farmed bison in a pretty much manicured back yard but I guess it still displays the big game killing power of the arrow gun which was the advertiser’s goal in the first place. Again I don’t believe he has ever featured this hunt himself.

As for those who don’t like him because of his general approach to hunting remote areas where game is plentiful and trophies are less of a challenge - you have to consider his roots. As a northern Canadian growing up with comparatively inexhaustible hunting lands and hunting a more varied game menu than pretty much all of us, it would be folly to expect him to even want to hunt the relatively small pressured lands a lot of us are used to just to prove that he can do it too (i wouldn’t be surprised if he could to be honest). He features “dream” hunts that require extensive travels and preparation for the most part - not the just slinging a tree stand and going for a mile walk type that it appears some here would like to see him do. It’s not his game; his requires a completely different set of skills.

I can relate to his approach on different plane. I consider myself a pretty seasoned trophy brook trout and northern pike fisherman. I love to fish for both of those species but you couldn’t pay me to go waste my time on crowded waters or where a few rare trophies might lurk but you might have to spend weeks or months on the water to get a crack at one.

If I go somewhere it’s because I expect my odds of landing 5lb trout or 20lb pike to be over 50% on a three day trip and with the real potential for 20-50 such encounters over the entire trip. It takes a different kind of trip with more equipment, a different kind of spécialisation, refinement, skills and knowledge to tackle those trips. Without being guided in one form or another, most of you would lack at least one of those key components to successfully pull off the type of fishing trip. And as these trips are kind of what I require to get serious with a rod and real. For many of you, if you’re inclined to fish for those species it would be “dream fishing” to go somewhere and land 50 northers in the 15-27lb range in a day of fishing but that’s what motivates me at this stage of my development.

I think Jim Shockey is in a similar place wrt hunting- he hunts for exclusiviely for trophies of extremely wide variety of big game. And he does it in the best remote (almost always public) lands he can access. Yes he “sells” bullets, firearms and optics etc but those types of shows don’t fund themselves...

I don’t dislike Shockey, there’s just nothing about him that captures my interest. I care nothing about chasing big game all over the world or hunting whitetails on giant tracks of land that never have seen a human. I just don’t have anything to relate to so it bores me. I compare it to a fly rod trout fisherman having to listen to some bass guy discussing soft plastic baits.

Lopedog699 wrote:I like wired to hunt but in my opinion is getting very comercialized. Having a few guests on there who hunt specific very low pressure properties not alot but seems to me the show is gradually drifting torwards the money makers drurys eberhart (which i am a very big fan of) and a couple other guys who the general public land hunter can not relate to i like the guys who do the podcasts i really do and No offense to them of course. But like ive said before there is way to much marketing and pushing of false hopes to the regular guy in these hunting shows. Buy this call bow etc and kill a huge buck. The hunting guys on tv do alot of things i chuckle over. And im a new hunter but know that its bs. High fences and half tame deer with 160 inch horns ( which i have read alot of deer ranches out west are shooting bucks with steroids and supplements for huge racks its just sad that eventually. The marketing ploys get you to sell their stuff but i guess thats why and how money is made

I don't think it's gotten any more commercialized. I've never heard them push any bows or calls. They have some sponsors, because how else do you get paid for a free program? They are fans of/sponsored by ozononics and sitka, but I don't feel like they are over the top.

Drury (ep 67 I think), Jeff Sturgis (7 on food plots and 77 or so on hunting strategy and timing), Don Higgins, dans, joeRE, Andy may, steve bartylla. Some of there random episodes on season recap or off season stuff is good as far as reflection of your own thoughts too. I dont stay up to date on current episodes, i listen to a handful of episodes regularly. Most of the celeb hunters I don't relate to, many of them have special circumstances. I think a person's hunting situation will dictate what they find useful.. I own property and can plant plots but also hunt other private and lots of public.

I don't mind the commercials, fairly easy to skip. Nothing is free and w2h is a business.

I agree with a previous poster, many strategies that people have are somewhat different. I think I've learned most from dan and Jeff Sturgis as far as hunting and I think they both take a different approach but have been very successful.

I listened to the an episode with jeff sturgis and Ive read jeff sturgise’s books and watch his videos on you tube
i like him but Imo He is kind of a guy for the big property owners or big ranches etc he is a huge guy on setting up bedding areas food plots etc. its his job very good at it and is knowledgeable about it too its great if your one of these owners but the majority of us arent
i really think a mature public land buck is just a different animal than a private 4-500 plus acre parcels
Alot of jeff’s tactics creating bedding areas, creating travel corrdors , funnels, and creating staging areas food plots etc. placement of 25-30 cameras on property ( who has money for even 3-4 cameras those things are expensive) oh yea and accessing your stands with a 6,000$ bycycle lol. Its easy to do when companies are sending you things every year to try to sell for them
This is just unrealistic tactics for the average hunter Once again jeff is mostly for the people who are owners of large tracks of land managed properties etc so alot of his tactics are very diffcult to be successful on public land using
So until i hit the power ball or mega millions lottery im gonna stick to this site which is really for the regular blue collared public land hunter when i do hit the lottery one day and buy a big chunk of land im still gonna ask dan and you guys about opinions on what to do and when to do it ( notice i said when i hit the jackpot). Lmao
i absolutely cringe all the time when the so called hunting media or industry people tell us we need this 500$ suit 30$ spray,150$ call,350$ stand,20$ lure,50$ bag of seed,150$ back pack 2,000$ bow or gun 600$ scope etc to kill an animal. But once again this is just just my opinion

Maybe it’s the internet talking and not picking up how a person feels but it seems you have a really negative vibe.

I’ve found that most things I’ve heard in my life may not apply %100 to just me. Jeff’s info that I’ve read about and watched on YouTube seems to be geared toward the small property owner.

200 was one of the best podcasts I've ever heard. I wish it was a week long. All of the guys are great hunters and excellent speakers. After I finished it I reloaded every Joe Elsinger podcast I've listened to. I need more JoeRE podcasts. Amazing stuff.

I’ll reveal my favorite episode. But FIRST, this weeks Sitka story!!!

Ok just kidding. Hands down my favorite guest... will be unveiled after a commercial from our friends at Whitetail Properties who this week are going to try to convince you that now is the time to buy land despite the fact that it’s a red hot real estate market!!!

All kidding aside, what number episode was Singing Bridge???
