How long a walk?

Unread postby Tim H » Sun Jan 21, 2018 3:58 am

I'm curious how long it takes for beast members to get to their stand locations (walking time). I'm aware that we have several areas so just list the longest commute you have.

For me the longest is about an hour if I take my time so I don't sweat or overheat.

Varies from 15 minutes to 1.5 hours. Every day is different.

If you think about it a lot of time is spent commuting to and from your stand. This was a challenge for me this past season for all day sits. Below is a breakdown of how my all day sits went when my stand was already in place. I'm trying to figure out my time management better.

Wake up at 4:00 a.m.
Get ready takes half hourish (4:30 a.m.)
Drive to parking lot takes 25 minutes (4:55 a.m.)
Walk in to hunting location takes hourish (5:55 a.m.)
Setup takes 5 minutes (6:00 a.m.)
Sit until dark - around 12 hours before daylight savings (6:00 p.m.)
Walk back to vehicle takes hourish (7:00 p.m.)
Drive back to cottage takes 25 minutes (7:25 p.m.)

An all day sit I do not have much time to prepare for the next day. Any suggestions?

I can't even throw out any numbers, that last 100-200 yards can sometimes take a half hour to hour or more if there is no wind, stealth mode takes up a majority of my time on entrance.

This is something I think I must get better at in taking my time upon entrance. I suppose when I was younger I was taught to get in the stand as quickly as possible.

Same here. My final approach can be agonizingly slow on calm days with crunchy leaves lol. Every day is different it just depends on the distance to the stand and conditions. I'd say it's 45-1hour on average.

This is definitely an area I need to improve on. Even if I slow down I end up moving too fast. If I just knew there was a big
deer that would be better motivation

No easy answer here. If I'm going in before first light and plan on being on stand an hour or so before I expect deer back in the bedding, I can cover 2 miles in 40 minutes. Other afternoon spots can take an hour and a half to go a quarter mile. Many longer once the leaves are down and there is no wind noise.

I have a couple prime rut spots that take between 60 and 90 minutes hiking but I have a couple spots within 100 yards of a road too and everything in between.

An all day sits are pretty damn tough. I definitely feel it the next day. Takes a lot of energy to do it and for me it’s hard to do consecutive days in a row.
