Getting Ready

Unread postby DaveT1963 » Wed Aug 21, 2019 12:30 am

This is an older video but since we have so many new Beast thought I would re-share. Why now? because, IMO/E, during season is when we need to start keeping accurate records/notes for future hunts and even next season. I have found my log book to be one of my most valuable tools to remind me what I learn as I go through a hunting season and to help determine where I want to concentrate scouting, tree prep and even hunting for next season. So often while I am hunting I see a nice 2.5/3.5 that will be a target animal the following year. Over the course of a season I would forget much of this info if I didn't keep a good log system.

And for finding stands I prep 1 to 2 years ago, the details on where it is, how to access and what gear i need and how to climb is invaluable.

This is just my system, hopefully it will encourage some others to get a system that works for YOU.

I remember the first time I watched this. I knew then that any time my wife thought I was too obsessive or analytical over my deer hunting, all I had to do was show her this video and prove that I have a ways to go yet
Seriously though, this is a heckuva system and it definitely got my wheels turning as to how to keep track of my scouting and hunting observations better. Thanks for sharing again

After watching this a second time, it would be amazing if we could get Dave on a HB podcast episode.

 I watched last year and realized how woefully unprepared I am. I did start capturing notes (perhaps not to the degree), but I'm ahead of where I was this time last season. Never to late to start with more details...

when you hunt 40+ WMAs in three states, some trees I haven't seen in 2-3 years. every tree is set up differently, so good notes is essential for me to know exactly how to access and climb, where my shooting lanes are and how high to set my platform. I have a system for sure but it helps. Its also very necessary when hunting AMs.

I keep a similar log for my mineral licks and trail camera locations :)

If you were, you would have all that stuff posted on the walls of a dark secret room off the basement, collage style. Not in tidy 3 ring binders.
